Yes it's official. Metal Detector Collector sickness!! Browsing the eBad, saw an old Fisher 440 VLF, guy said he didn't know if it worked, (that's code for BROKEN), I bid on it and of course now it's mine. How many think that I really need this old early 70's VLF that's guaranteed not to work? Sick, sick, sick! Someone please get me some help!

Yeah, I know the feeling. I've looked at vintage White's detectors like old Goldmasters, etc. from the late '60's to 70's which I remember seeing in White's 'Discover' magazine when they were current and I couldn't possibly afford at 13 or 14 years old.

Now they go for nothing and if I had the room, I'd probably have a collection that I don't need.

Yup, a sickness.

"Dang!" Did it again. White's 4900/D Pro Plus somehow finding it's way to my address. Please take my PayPal away from me! When they get here I'll post pics. Yes Saturna is corect about about not being able to afford them when they were the current models. Now I can and no I shouldn't. LoL

Since most goodies are within the 8" and less range, those older name brand detectors will still get the job done very well. The only ones to stay away from would be the series of Whites that you had to whip around like you were cutting the tall grass. I couldn't understand why Whites designed a discrimination circuit that required such drastic swinging. That's why I got a Garrett's back then, even though I had a White's and was upgrading to a better machine. I'd used a slingblade to cut tall grass and I was not about to buy a detector that needed the same swings. Hell, the hobby was supposed to be relaxing.

Yeah the oldies were goodies back then when we couldn't afford them. Not with the newer ones the price is still to high where we can't afford them. I sometimes wish I still had one of my old TR, none motion detectors like the C&G Bobcat. Now that was a lot of fun as you didn't even have to hold it up, just slid the coil along the ground. Now we have motion all metal pinpoint. Step backwards IMO.

Well the Fisher 442 finally arrived yesterday and "what a piece of junk!" The picture posted on eBad was 50 times better than the item. You guessed it, as we all did, "it don't work!" Gotta ask myself, "Did I learn anything?" Nooooooo! I'm sure to do it again. Some immortal once said, "Stupid is as stupid does." Well at least the 4900/D seems to work well.

I have yet to swing a detector just bought the cortes for Christmas and I really want the new gold bug already and the wife will need a vaquero honest I won't touch it the grandkids bountyhunters, etc........ I can see this hobby could easily get out of hand that's not mentioning what's on the ebay watchlist lol.

That on the wall looks like the goldmaster I picked up at a yard sale, I am trying now to refire up my Compass Relic Magnum 6, had a lot of fun with that machine, and actually it hunted fairly deep. later Osgood
