I guess to give a little more info flint can certainly have bands and it is showing a fracture pattern that flint exhibits. It has a cryptocrystalline structure which means it can fracture in any shape. As opposed to say salt which will always break into smaller cubes

Other The Better, thanks for the education. I knew about the fracture pattern but not the banding. Readily scratched a glass a few minutes ago - so will call this [SOLVED]. Thanks all!
