I was walking the dog this morning and saw this snake in the gutter. After poking it with a stick a few times, I found out it was dead.
Of course, being the jokester :icon_jokercolor: that I am, I carried it home and laid it next to the newspaper in the driveway. ;D
When my wife & daughter came home they freaked! They wouldn't even drive up the driveway with it there. :tongue3:
My question now is.........is this a Copperhead or water snake?
Thanks,
MM

MM? What if it was one of those snakes that play dead and you picked it up? I cringe at the thought.

If you dont believe me I googled this tidbit. http://74.125.47.132/search?q=cache...te+dead+snake+poison&cd=2&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us

A snake's detached head can immediately act by reflex and potentially bite. The bite can induce just as bad an effect as a live snake bite.[10] Dead snakes are also incapable of regulating the venom they inject, so a bite from a dead snake can often contain large amounts of venom.

Google dead snake poison

I think the venom is still inside the snake. I have played with snakes all my life but I would not fool with a poisonous snake dead or alive.
..esp with your family. Dispose of it...bury it. Or cut the head off and keep the skin. Myself I just dont like poisonous snakes.

JUST BEING SCRATCHED BY THE FANGS OF A DEAD POISONOUS SNAKE CAN CAUSE SERIOUS HARM.

BCH,
You are probably right. Thanks for the links. Maybe I should just dispose of it before the dog finds it. Thanks for talking some sense into me.

If you want to put it in alcohol to teach the kids at school, I guess that is a good thing. But dont fool with it. I love snakes but I just dont like poisonous ones. Maybe its just me. Its not like a bee or wasp bite. Google some snake bite pics and it will scare you. I took a guy to the hospital, his arm turned black and had to be sliced open. He was playing with a snake in a cage.

Thanks Ivan.
I put the Copperhead in the garbage can. I was going to use it for Musky bait on my Wisconsin fishing trip in a few weeks, but I thought it would be a bit smelly by then. ;D

Doug! You live in North Carolina and don't know what a Copperhead looks like? Whats goin on maaan! lol Yeah, that guy will put ya in stitches. If he is near a spot that threatens kids or you or your wife etc.. Kill it. sorry, but, Most people think if they catch them and release them somewhere else they will be fine. Not true. They will end up dying anyway..Here at the camp we can't afford for a kid to get bit. So, we nuke em here. Don't even mess with that snake man. I know someone who wanted to keep a cottonmouth to show kids. Even when snakes are dead and you prick your little finger with a fang like he did. A day after the snake was killed....he ended up in the emergency room and lost his finger.

for sure copperhead.....if you come accross a nest you will get a copper taste in your mouth like a penny in there. it also produces a foul musky odor. poisonous but no recorded deaths of copperhead bite in missouri, although serious injury, near death and or loss of limbs/rotted meat is common.

Yeah that's a copperhead alright. You got to be careful with those even dead ones. Snake poison remains toxic long after death and/or removal.

Thanks for backing me up. Ive heard that it is true. Nothing to play around with.

I even read a story in the book, "Forty Years in the Everglades," about a man that killed a moccasin and later was wading in the water where it was killed and was poisoned through a small cut on his leg. The poison from the dead snake was in the water.

Thanks for the info. I was always getting the water snakes mixed up with the Copperheads. ;D I'm from Indiana, so all I ever had to deal with was the deadly Garter snake. :tongue3: I'm sure you see a lot more of these over there in the NC mountains. Normally I just see the Black snakes. This is one of the reasons I stay out of the woods in the summer months.

***THANKS TO ALL OF YOU. This has been a great learning experience for me too. I HATE SNAKES!!!

That's kinda like the Tabloid headline (national inquirer),, "Rattle Snake Belt Comes To Life, Bites Man On Belly" ;D ;D ;D. Tony
