Since I have been back in town I noticed that the member participation is lower than usual. At the time of this writing, we have 5 members and 40 guests viewing this entire forum. :o:icon_scratch: And it has been this way for several days. It seems there is little more than a handfull of members participating at one time. :3some: This has me worried. :( Are members losing interest in the What Is It forum? What can we do to increase participation?

Newbies and Guests are welcome to respond. Maybe I can get some insight from an outsider. Thanks.

This is my favorite forum and I hate to see it stagnate.

Perhaps it might be something to do with the quality of finds, that's posted, some items seem pretty mundane sometimes, and not worth research :-\

Thanks for responding SS. :icon_thumright: I will think about it. There are some old names that were regulars for years that I just dont see here anymore and it saddens me to lose their input.

:dontknow: Could it be that with the economy being what it is that people just don't have the time and are out trying to make a dollar to keep from losing the home? I know when things get tight I tend to concentrate on getting the bills caught up and have much less time for the computer thing. :dontknow: Just my cents worth. Can't afford two of them. Bills are bigger than the paycheck. I'd like to go playing along the coast with my underwater gear but am having trouble getting the boat done on a tight budget. I need a few thousand dollars to get out on the water but the electronics, the repairs and upgrades will have to be done on a low budget. That means less time to play. The dive gear needs upgrading and tanks need hydro, water system needs a pump and stuff like that. Not a lot but working on a budget can slow you down. Maybe I'll get caught up enough to go out on anchor next month and start heading along the west coast of Florida and down through the Keys over the winter. In the spring I'd like to head up to the Chesapeake for the summer and back south when the cold hits up north. All I can do now is creep along until I get the funds lined up and can get going.

Good topic BigCy. I for one really miss the posts from the "old timers" on here. It seems to me that the whole atmosphere changed during all the crap during the election campaigns and the politics since. Look at all the boards that have been added that have nothing to do with T.H'n. Maybe we can take a roll call for the missing folks from say 3 yrs and earlier. I'm kinda bummed today as its time up here to pull the batteries again. Remember when we usually closed with H.H.?

That could be. I myself am having big problems and I may not be here much longer.

I miss the "oldtimers". Where is Montana Jim? Pleabah? ...and many others.

BCH - Part of it may be due to the weather changing. Folks are trying to get in as much hunting time as possible and will worry about sorting and identifying things when the weather dictates that they stay indoors.

My 2 cents and...

Don't you dare go anywhere bigcy! I am still hanging on. What discourages me some times is when a person asks a question about a find and wants to argue with everyone's opinion. Usually it is someone who only has 3 or 4 posts and thinks they have found something very valuable when it's a pretty common item. I also sometimes get upset when I see an item and just make a guess and someone else comes on and insinuates how stupid I am. I always say it's just a guess unless I really have a good idea about what it is. I do make some really dumb guesses, but I know it at the time and don't hesitate to say so. And then there is the person who puts everything he/she finds under "what is it". Most of the time it's just an old rusty piece of iron that no one can identify. In spite of that I will stick around and try to be as pleasant as an old fart can. Monty

Maybe everyone's out detecting. :laughing7:

At this moment we have 12 members and 43 guests viewing. Maybe some of the guests will join and become regular members. I think we need more input. We need more interesting finds and we need more specialists in different fields. There was a time when professional Archaeologists used to post here.

I am here a lot and not logged in. That would make me appear to be a guest. Also, although I have been away for awhile and don't post that often, I try to check in now and then. The first thing that I noticed when I came back to Tnet this time was the absence of some familiar names that I used to see on here all the time. I've also noticed that the What's It forum has slowed down quite a bit. It's my favorite place on Tnet where even someone like me, (with no real expertise in anything) can have fun trying to solve some of the mysteries. I hope the forum is here for a long time to come. BTW I have been a member for about four years and don't plan on going anywhere. So you're all stuck with me. ;D Like it or not. John

BigCy,

I know what you are talking about. Used to be, even the most mundane garbage would get a lot of responses. It used to get kind of crazy and very funny (remember the squirrel lure). HAHAHA

Hi Guys and Gals,

Guess I can be called an old timer on here that has not been around much lately..... I really like the people here, and the forum is fantastic. I started my treasure hunting with this site, and learnt so much about detecting from the old guys.

I first registered on the 14 /6/2005,
To date have 1303 posts to my name,
Reached banner once with a gold coin.

Why is it that I am not around much anymore?

1) I was reading too many posts where people were being knocked down by others very badly, from saying that their finds were not found, to finds be bought etc..... It does not matter how they were acquired, I feel if the person lies about their finds, they are letting themselves down..... Others do not have the right to knock another person down.
2) We had a couple of guys that were just making everyone miserable at the time, and I know the moderators who by the way are fantastic, did everything to sort these people out, but it went on for far too long.
3) I found that there was far too much political / religious topics being discussed instead of what the forum is about,,,, treasure. (oh and I was guilty on one or two of them, but stopped when I realized that this was not the place for it).

Those are the main reasons that I walked away.... I do come back pretty often now, but do not post as much as I used to..... I am also not used to most of the people here now as they have come since I slowed down..... I would need to get used to each individuals ways of posting and to what finds they find.... that is learnt over time.

And I went through a very bad illness which kept me away, for which the old timers know about.....

Am I still around? Yes I am, but as a silent reader most of the time, as I do not want to get into arguments again with people (I had a couple of nasty PM's sent to me calling me a liar on a find by those same guys who made everyone miserable).

So, maybe the moderators should look at the topics on this site, and see if they relate to treasure hunting, otherwise remove them..... And also to monitor people who call others liars or cause other problems and put a stop to it...... But saying that, I also know that it is very difficult to moderate a forum, in fact it is a dogs job trying to keep the peace....... What is the final answer? If I don't like what is happening, then leave....

Hope that gives some of you an idea as to why some left? But please do not get me wrong, as far as a forums are concerned.... this one rates top in my eyes......

God bless
Peter

Well I am pretty new here so don't know what has changed. But, people come, and people go. The group dynamic changes. What people find changes. Once you have ID'd something 25 times you might loose interest.

I don't do modern, don't do values, and don't really know coins. The rest I probably post too much.

I am online all the time, but not always logged in.

My 2¢

It used to get crazy here. That was a tough nut to crack. http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,37090.0.html

Its good to see the old members still lurking around, maybe not posting as much. Where is DigEmAll, diving doc and Gypsy Heart?

I remember DigEmAll organized a group to donate a detector to Russia to dig the Eastern Front. BTW where is Nahabit? Those German skull pics raised a fuss but it showed the reality of war.
