I've never had a problem, and lord knows I can eat a pile of them (cracker crumbs, eggs, and butter..MMMM)... But I did have a couple friends who drank beer with theirs (I warned them), and they got sick... My buddy Paul, went and threw up, then next thing I know he is back eating them... "I just cant stay away from them, they are just too good"..

Wish I would have found some while I was in Oregon, it was just too early... Their probably everywhere now...+

This is a common thing I have heard of many times, I was once told that there is a mushroom called a "False Morel" which is almost identical to the regular morels we love so much but is poisionous! If ingested makes one very ill and has flu like symptoms. Maybe if you follow this lead and do a little research it will end up with a bit of knowledge that might save your belly some grief lol. I wish I stilled lived where those tasty buggers grew :(

It's said the 'false morel' is poisonous if eaten raw, but ok to eat after cooking. Many mushrooms have this
same warning . The mushroom book says 'a person can eat false morels 1 or 2 times with no ill effects &
get sick eating them another time. :dontknow: I had a nice batch last week with no problems.

HMMMMMMMMMMM: NO it is not possible, probably the butter and side dishes can not be the shrooms at all. Nice shroomin there for sure. Hardrock :hello2:

Yeah it is possible to eat too many.

But it is an individualistic reaction, more in some than others.

I too, have had guests get sick on them, so that if I don't know they're OK with it (as in old and GOOD friends), I don't serve them for company.

The alcohol reaction is from the Coprinus family, of which the morel doesn't belong (morchella).

So, be moderate, and enjoy!

False Morel = Gyromitra. Alexander H. Smith, in an early mushroom field guide, said Gyromitra esculenta could be eaten if parboiled. Alex was allergic to all mushrooms. His daughter, Nancy, says G. esculenta should be avoided. It contains monomethylhydrazine, a potent carcinogenic (cancer causing), very similar to dimethylhydrazine, which used to be used as rocket fuel. When a fuel line broke at NASA, several people came down with rare cancers within a week after being exposed to dimethylhydrazine: EXTREMELY CARCINOGENIC.

Nancy told me that even dried and cooked false morels retain significant quantities of MMH and DMH. Even morels (Morchella sps.) must be consumed in moderation, and should NEVER be consumed with alcohol. There are known cases of someone eaten morels and a glass of wine, and becoming legally drunk in minutes. Drying may not remove all MMH from morels; but it can't hurt, either.

The Japanese have the lowest incidence of mushroom poisonings in the world. They ALWAYS cook mushrooms. Learn from the experts ...

Many wild mushrooms contain indigestible proteins. Though they may be legitimately non-toxic, eating a huge amount can cause some serious stomach upset. Many other foods actually fall into this category (though for different reasons). How would you feel the next day if you ate 12 pounds of baked beans (LOL)? How about 12 pounds of nice, greasy bacon? 12 pounds of mayonnaise, straight out of the jar? Toxicity is one thing, but overindulging is possible with many foods that are safe to eat in smaller quantities. Morels may fall into the "indigestible" category for some people if consumed in huge amounts.

Looks like a tasty meal.

Yes, but was the Rapture caused by the morels or the '64 Lafitte Rothschild?

I'm for both!

As something of a fungal expert (see my nom de plume) I'm certain that truffles are better than morels. No recent comparison tastings between truffles and '64 Lafitte Rothschild, though.<sigh>

alas, nor have i. i can, however, vouch for a plate full of morels and a coupla three genesee cream ales.
it's the simple pleasures...

Mushrooms and the way people react to them are quite funny phenomenon. Some people are extremely allergic, some mildly, some not at all...and it's not all mushrooms. Some people are just allergic to some, and it seems to be that the reaction is very similar to eating a poisonous one. Stomach and gut issues. Some mushrooms are only good cooked. Some are good raw etc...
I wouldn't doubt you may have eaten too many. Or it could be that one of them was not a true morel...look here. Apparently, if even one of them was a false morel you could react violently.
