Been finding big groups of them this last week and we fried up about 12 pounds of morel mushrooms tonight for supper... I am sick as a dog but the last one tasted as good as the first one. It probably would be a good way to go!!!!!! Happy Hunting, Todd

hope u didnt slip a bad one in there...wow 12lbs...thats a meal

i say no, but your empirical evidence says otherwise.
there are several types of morels, some more edible than others.
also, don't know if it happens much with morels, but there are several species of mushrooms
that don't mix well with alcohol.
i've served mushrooms to a room full of people and had one or two out of ten or twenty get sick.
i suppose that it's a bit of trial and error, but man, when it's an error, what a trial!

There old mushroom hunters and there's bold mushroom hunters but theres no old , bold mushroom hunters.... go figure.

Mr Bigealive,

I believe its not so much the mushroom as it is the grease from the frying. I can not have to much grease or I'm hurt'n and reaching for the Plop Plop fiz, fiz stuff. The Plumber.

I agree. Most likely the grease. They sure are good though. Mmm Mmm!

I could test the theory if you wanted to send me twelve pounds of them!

I am fine. By the way, there was six of us together at the big fry-up. Just had to let it settle and use the restroom. Now, kicking back with a bottle o beer!!!!! Get season for the shrooms. Suspose to rain for another 2 days and get back into the eighties so my bet is I'm not done with the sweet little buggers!!!! Happy huntin', Todd

BUTTER yes butter.
We went through 8 sticks of the greasy stuff so I probably consumed a stick or so...

The crushed saltines pack plenty of salt too especially when we used two boxes or I guess 8 bags of them and 18 eggs.
All in all, we went down so I will live to eat and detect another day but still having wiped all the grease out of my beard. HAHA Happy Huntin' Todd

Sorry to tell you this but....yes. I know because I did the same thing once. Sat down and ate a very large plate full all by myself. It was like the worst case of flu I ever had times 2. The worst thing was I could not stand to look at a morel for about 10years after that. Even today 20 years later I cannot eat more than a hand full, just don't taste the same anymore.
But I still love to go hunt them. Take care, it will pass in a day or two.

In my neck of the woods, there are people who have hunted them an eaten them for decades. Then it seems they can no longer tolerate them. Let's just say, (violently ill). They will never eat them again. Kinda like me and Southern Comfort.
Truth be told there is a certain amount of toxicity to them. It seems that once you lose your immunity to them, your done.

lol, 1969, my first weekend back from year TDY in Okinawa I polished off 2 fifths of Southern Comfort, haven't had a drop since,........shoot I haven't even been able to smell the bottle cap....

I've hunted morels for years, and have a big stash of dehydrated ones. They say you should eat them moderately, if you eat too many you can get sick. So I always just eat a nice little portion, never over do it.

Is it possible to eat too many morels?

NO.

mind if i would test it for you, and my answer is a no yummm

I like morels, but not that much.

I gotta ask: why didn't you dry some of 'em? They're a lot easier to store, and you'll have some for several months. I dry any excess, and store them in a zip-lock bag in my freezer. Easy to rehydrate: just stick 'em in a little warm water for 10-15 minutes, then they are ready to cook and serve.

BTW, Nancy Smith Weber, who has authored a few books on the subject, told me she was able to get nearly 100% of spores from dried morels to germinate after a year when the material was stored away from sunlight. You might want to dry some and create your own morel bed for next year.

MMMM...

A bottle of Southern Comfort (straight shots w/ pepsi chasers) and sautéd morels sound pretty good to me eight about now.

The smell of Jack Daniels will turn my stomach now.

Everything in moderation.

until the morel improves!! the beatings will continue! :laughing7: willy

I can't say i've ever overdone it on morels but I guess I haven't tried to put down a few pounds at a time either.

This takes me back to about 12 yrs of age. My older brother gives me a wintergreen bandit pouch of chewing tobacco but forgets to give me instructions. I was done with it in a few seconds and asked for another one. Then I had this feeling like a volcano was erupting in my stomach followed by two days of regretful yacking. To this day the smell of chewing tobacco brings instant nausea. Thanks for bringing back this pleaseant memory. lol JJ

If you could have sold the 12 lbs of Morels, wouldn't you have made a small fortune? What are they going for now? I just came back from a trip to Melrose, MN, and my Bro_in-Law found 3 of them. That was my first taste, and man were they good! I also had several beers and felt fine. Perhaps the people getting sick eat some morels and drink 15 beers, no wonder they throw up :)
