Hello everyone, I found this bell at an old house site today here in Jeffersonville, Indiana. The only thing that I have been able to find out about it is that it is called a "Crotal" bell. There is a "G" makers mark on the bottom and is cast bronze. This looks to be one of the oldest things that I have found to date. Does anyone have any idea on age, value or any other info? Thanks and HH!

Based on the size of it, I would GUESS it is from horse (sleigh) bells similar to this:

We call this the sun rise pattern. Probably as stated mid 1800s. Used either on the sliegh or larger cattle.

Its technically only a Crotal Bell if the loop is cast with the top section which would make it a 2 piece construction. 3 piece construction (loop seperate) are later & call Rumbler Bells.

The "G" might be part of one of the following marks, or a single mark also used by J. N. Goff:

J. N. Goff &Amiel Abel: G & A , East Hampton, CT.

J. N. Goff, Amiel Abel & Alfred Williams: G. A. & W., East Hampton, CT, c. 1837-1851.

Thanks for the info everyone! Even after being in the ground for so long it still gives a nice ring. I found it just in time for the holidays. I might even hang it on the tree just for kicks. ;D Thanks again and HH!
