I found this stone here in New Jersey today. I was sifting an early colonial site on high ground next to a waterway. The stone has been worked smooth and is not from around here. Any ideas?? Thanks Dave indian stone1.jpgindian stone2.jpg

If it's not from around where you found it -- not one of the locality's lithics -- somebody pretty obviously picked it up somewhere else and carried it home with him. Such items are called manuports ("hand carried's) and turn up on nearly every site in greater or lesser numbers.

What many of them may have been used for is anybody's guess but they definitely belong in site assemblages.

It looks like concrete that was deliberately poured so it was smoothed on top.
