Incredibly sharp 1970-D Nickel

Hey all, any thoughts on this 1970-D nickel? It has incredible, incredible detail. I'm not aware of any proofs minted for this year. Is it just a strong AU coin?

If it was a proof it wouldn't have a D on it. To me it almost looks plated.

Oh I know it's not a proof. Odd if it is indeed a plated coin. Seems like an obscure date to do something like that?

Science projects are done all of the time in school. That could explain the odd date.

The Denver Mint often produces coinage of exceptional quality and especially so, Nickels, Dimes and even Cents. However, it is possible that in 1970, the Denver Mint may have had failures on all of their' Nickel "Obverse" Dies and had to request some unused Proof Dies which were then punched with a "D" Mint Mark to finish the planned production numbers for the year. If that was the case, then the coin would be considered a Die Variety! If none are known to exist, it would take extensive examination of the coin and the known Proof Master Dies made in 1970 for Proof Nickel production, to confirm or dispell whether a Proof Die was used.
