I was back at the park this weekend where last week I got
a nice Franklin Half.
My two friends were with me and we each headed off in a
different direction.
I was working in a canyon on the side of the park and my friend was near.
I notice a hole where he had been last week and I yelled at him to
fill his holes. He yelled back that it was his buddy who he had brought
the week before. That guy was somewhat inexperienced and didn't find much
that week. Well, as I was going down the slope, I noticed a hole that was partially filled.
I put my coil over it and it gave out a nice high tone.
So I started digging with my Lesche. First thing I came upon was a small colored
plastic spoon piece that was green. I figured that the other guy might have seen this
and assumed it was what he was detecting and just covered up the hole a bit.
I kept getting a signal, so I kept digging down expecting an aluminum can.
Then I saw a small case, reached in ans saw this. I was hoping that it was
full of old coins or old bills, but unfortunately, all it had was a really old tobacco inside
of some type of woven cloth.
I cleaned it out and polished it up. It appears to be from the turn of the century.
I did scratch it twice with my Lesche, but the only good part of that is that it was
on the back. It weighs about 87 grams sterling.

What a cool find! A great piece of History from years past!! A RELIC for sure! Make sure you don't scrap it and sell it to a collector before selling for Cash - too nice of history to be melted down!

I am sure you will keep it!

No, this one won't get scrapped.
This brings up an issue at our club that I have been arguing about
for a few meetings now. We have a voting table where we vote
best finds for the month.
They will not allow people to decide whether this is a relic or
a piece of silver. Because it is marked "sterling" it must be judged
in the "Best Silver" catagory.
I keep telling them it should be up to the individual hunter, and they should change their
rules. After all, there are numerous items that can be catagorized
in two catagories (Best Gold, Best Silver, Best Jewelry, Best Relic, Most Unusual, Best North American Coin, Best World coin or token) and you should be able to pick where
YOU want to place it. I can only win once!

Man, that is one sweet piece of silver there - wtg!

A beautiful silver trophy, for a walk in the park nice job

I agree, that's an awesome looking case, and a great weight also.

Don't let anyone even mention scrapping that for weight! Georgous!

Hell, I'd change my name to the initials engraved on that, and start carrying it around with me.
I've only dug partial cases, always made of brass.
And burnt or just plain beat-up. Very, very, nice find!
