And a heck of one too. That's the fort my 12 pound french cannonball originated.

Re: In my trash pouch 1700's token

I'm interested. What's the story behind the medal?

Re: In my trash pouch 1700's token

Sorry for the abbreviated post earlier but I was late for a wake. Not a good thing. Anyway for the story. 16 degrees this morning and I had two hours to hunt .Went to what I think is the oldest area of our town and tried to work a real trashy area. I was really trying to just remove trash hoping for a good tone. This tone came up copper but when I picked it up, it was so big and so thin I thought can lid. When I checked the trash later something said wash that off. I have a hard time believing this is that old ,as our soil really does a number on copper .I was hoping someone would have an idea of what age this might be..It really seems to have some good detail I am going to soak it in oil for awhile and hope for more (detail). Thanks for the help and the comments Goldbill

These medallions are made from lots of types of metal, yours looks kind of pewter :icon_scratch: :dontknow: It should be easy to ID with the amount of letters you have left. They often commemorated famous people or events, so might not be the date on the piece but 50 or 100 years later. Equally could be closer to the time. The ID will not take too long after you spell out all the letters.

Re: In my trash pouch 1700's token

got it!

Medal commemorating Admiral Edward Boscawen (1711-1761) and the capture of Louisbourg, 1758. Obverse: Admiral Boscawen, half-length figure (right). Legend: 'ADML BOSCAWEN TOOK CAPE BRETON.' Reverse: View of ships in harbour. Legend: 'LOUISBURG HARBOUR.' Exergue: 'IUL . 26 1758.

looks like it was made in 1758??

edit: this looks like it might be pretty rare. if you do a google search most of the examples that come up are from reputable sources : museums, yale, stacks, etc. check it out.

Grasshopper you are amazing .That is what it says but the bust is a little different Mine doesn't have an arm on it . The arm is off above the elbow for sure but everything seems to match.. What brought that to Bangor Maine??????

Re: In my trash pouch 1700's token

News of the capture of the fortress
of Louisbourg was met with widespread
enthusiasm by the English public, and
resulted in a large production of
commemorative medals. Most were of
inferior quality and produced in brass for
the general public. While produced in
large quantities, the poor workmanship
of these crude pieces is no doubt
responsible for their scarcity, since they
were probably not considered of
sufficient value to be saved. Although
the siege and capture of Louisbourg was a joint effort of the naval forces under
Boscawen and the army led by General
Amherst, curiously no mention of
Amherst is made on any of these medals

yours seems to be variety BETTS 403...one of the more common ones, unfortunately.

This park just keeps on giving (maybe the season) The mercury came from a spot another mercury came from this spring. How did I miss it then? I mean really only 12 inches .. :icon_scratch: :icon_scratch: Goldbill
