Its a commemorative medal, you could swap it but it had no real value as a token or coin, because its not one.

Right I think I get that but what did they do with them? Did they give a bunch to every sea captain to hand out around the would to spread the news ???? Or were the medallions just handed out to the participants of the battle?? It's really interesting in this day and age Goldbill

Nice souvenir recalling french domination in the New World, they lost because France did not care enough about their sovereignty in North America.

The above by Whitebeard almost answered it, they were sold as souvenir's, normally at big events.
