I'm going to the beach, looking for tips and tricks

Well heading to Fla. in April planning to bring my detector(when I make my final decision on one) I've never really hunted a beach before, any tips would be a great help to me. Is there better places than others to hunt - waist deep water, shallow, or wet sand. Is low tide the best time to hunt or high tide. I've heard entryways are good. Do more people hang out near the life guard chairs? Any other suggestions you guys might have? whats a good scoop

Dam,..... I meant to mention about the "cams",......

Good that another member spoke up.

Look online,.... there are cams viewing "a lot" of places.

Imagine they put one on the roof of the lifeguard headquarters,..... one up
high on some tower or something,...

You can start your education from home.

You can add a little weather widget for that area to your devise,.....

In a couple of minutes you can study the population, the weather, tides,....

All in a minute or two.


Have fun on your trip

My belly tells me that you should hit a park or two just for giggles.
(in an upscale neighborhood)

They are unfortunately expensive.
I got mine at Sunspot Tooling when Chuck owned it. Here’s the link:

stay away from Naples, Fla. it is sanded in real bad.
 

Honestly....... why pay that kind of money for a CF handle if you are a full time hunter. I am, but all my scoops i use a fiberglass shovel handle on them...... $20 maybe and some have been on there for more than 7 years. Carry you scoop.... put a throw away handle on it when you get there. They are long...... have a wood dowel and closed tip making them float in the water. You might take a good look at the GOLDENOLDES page........ lots of good info.
 

I second the need for dive boots or the like on all beaches, in and out of the water. I would not even consider walking bare foot on a Florida beach after what I've found metal detecting over the past 10 years. Also, important to stay out of the water if you have any kind of open sore or wound - sea water does NOT clean a wound but if might infect it with a flesh eating bacteria and no more metal detecting for Ya.
 

So we are staying in New Smyrna Beach - I lived there when I was young and had Family there. Plan on hitting Daytona as well. Thanks for all the help I'm getting, I really appreciate it. I've already been checking out the cams they are a good source. I'm going to pick up that book by Andy Sabisch. I'm a gold Dredger(hobby Prospector) as well so I've got the boots and gloves I'll be taking thanks to your suggestions.
 

The main "tip" I can give is...

Make sure your metal detector is ON before detecting.

:)
 

Make sure your batteries are charged before you try to turn it on.
 

093.JPG You probably know this, but some people might not.Set up a grid pattern when beach hunting ,using your foot prints as a guide. Make the grid as big or small as you feel comfortable with ,just like mowing the lawn,back & forth.Pix.included was from 2 weeks ago on Melbourne beach......Good luck :)
PS ...1 foot of sand was remover in 1 day due to high winds & waves as can be seen here.

You can call them and tell them where you're headed,.......

They will help you choose the right unit.

Right size, shape, and hole size, for the conditions you'll be dealing with.

well isny anybody going to tell me what what those spiny little thing s are called again ? no just leave me hangin ? what are friends for ? friends help friends drive drunk. thats my tip for the day. now if u want to know the best way to do that just ask me.

My trips to the beach I never found a tip but a couple times I was approached about a trick:)
 

Another tip.... (on beach sand, wet & dry). Forget using the "standard Scoop with holes". A shovel will dig deeper & Faster than Any scoop made.074.JPG002.JPG
