I'll NEVER Get These Home!

I wasn't using a detector but did eyeball these today!

While doing research on the cannon fragment I found last weekend I learned of several cannons that have been abandoned near where I live. Little Patrick and I decided we were going to find them. It took some treking as they are well off the beaten path but we found them.

I shouldn't joke about getting them home...5 years ago someone actually tried to remove them from where they've been sitting since 1812 but were only able to move one a few feet. The huge rope in the pictures is actually from the thieves which was left behind.

They left it there. Finders Keepers. Like taking Candy. Did you check to see if one was still loaded?

These are AMAZING. I would love to just find those sitting in the woods.

If they were in philly, they would have been picked up by a crack head and sold for scrap!!
I once had a guy running down the street with one of my 40ft ladders. He only weighed about 90lbs. Lol I wanted to higher him. Haha.
They are awesome, thanks for posting the picks.

You wanted to "higher" a crackhead with a ladder, ,,,sounds like he was taking care of that all by himself
That sure made me laugh

Lol!!! Hire..

That is crazy. Never saw anything like that.
Your locale must be broke to not put them in a museum.
Well--looks like a great detecting spot--fire up the iron eater and go for it!

Wow to see they are still there and in decent condition is amazing! I think I would offer to restore and conserve them at the cost of having the government let one behind at my house. The worst one, of course! :laughing9:

I think one would look great as it greets customers who show up to Fort Bedford! lol

Didn't know what to expect when I read your post....WOW! Those are incredible! Thanks for the pics!

Hard to believe they are still there, AWESOME, I would find a way to get a couple home and make lamp posts because my neighbor had aluminum missiles for driveway markers

Man I am sure glad I wasn't an artillery soldier having to move those guns around. Thanks for posting the pics.

Wow! Those are really awesome. It's crazy they have been sitting there since 1812. Wonder when they will move them away for preservation and display. Really cool and great pictures.

It's interesting that they could only be air lifted. Unless there's a foundry 10 feet away, those soldiers in 1812 moved them there without a helicopter. Or did they? ALIENS!!

Thanks for the great picture, nice memory!

Very very cool find! The suggestion that they are too heavy to move would just give me more impetus to get one out of there. Without looking too hard, you could probably move one with a heavier duty car jack, a wheeled sling and a portable winch. I can't believe they haven't been graffitied up yet... Better someone who cares take them before the wrong person comes along and thinks they would look nicer neon...

Wow, that is awesome! Those need to be preserved!

Wow... just caught this thread...
That is frigging amazing.

I cannot believe those are still there.

Those are absolutely incredible relics! Apparently we here on Tnet are much more excited about them than the powers that be who could move and restore them. Thanks for those amazing pics. I'm blown away

I'm sure they could be moved with the proper equipment and wherewithal but to me it's no surprise that they haven't been spray painted. These are well off the beaten path and not easy to get to. Some "industrious" sorts tried to relocate them a few years back and were able to move one a few feet. They were using rollers, skids, ropes and jacks and working under the cover of darkness. These are on the edge of a cliff leading down to the rocky shore of the Bay of Fundy so they most likely had a boat waiting...at which time they would have had to contend with the highest and fastest tides on the planet so timing would have been everything. The ropes they used are still wrapped under one of the cannons as is the rope leading down to the beach...

Personally I think they should stay right where they are and maybe put up a couple interpretive signs describing the site and the significance of the cannons...maybe put a trail in from the road. Problem there is that it is private property from the road to the cannons so you would need permission from the land owners and I've heard that they are not too inclined to do so.

Great responses...here are a couple more pics...in the third pic you can see more of the equipment that was being used to relocate them...

Also, based on these numbers this cannon weighs 4602 pounds.
