I found this at cellar hole I've been hunting in southern mass in the Berkshire region. At first I thought it was a button but it's not. It has has an r isignia on it could it be military? This item has got me stumped and curious to know how old it is the only object that could date the area is an 1847 large cent my friend found. Any help would be awesome-relic dude

I agree canonball. If that's how creskol talks on this forum..I can't imagine how he talks outside. He needs to calm down maybe take a break from all the problem solving and posting he's been doing. I have respect for you guys but sometimes one needs to relax. Just like you guys have pet peeves ..so do I. Much respect to all of you.

My final words
... I have pet peeves, too, Bryan, and you rank high among the top 4. .. You do not know me from Adam (thank God), yet here you are interjecting your 2¢ worth about yet another subject you know absolutely nothing about. .. precisely the reason I am leaving this place. You all can continue playing your game of "Nonsensical Gibberish" without me here to witness the erosion of this forum.

Come on guys ,, its spring fever , i have only been a member here for a year but i stayed a member because the Vast knowledge and friendly attitude . true i did see a few people argue from time to time , and some times people just have a bad day.
Stuff was said on both sides and i am sure both sides feel strongly about it , got to respect the Vets here with thousands of posts ,because like Cannon said they have helped countess people , but the new guys are also doing what we can do to help and in a few years we may be the Vets ( heaven help us all ).
so shake hands and agree to disagree guys and lets solve this and not screw up the OPs post .:)

In case you didnt know, creskol has been extremely helpful IDing items on the WIT forum over several years. His advice to HutSiteDigger was also helpful and HutSiteDigger appears to be OK with it.

To tell you the truth, Im a bit taken back by the recent criticism in the WIT forum by some of the fairly new members that hardly ever have anything helpful to add other than criticism of those doing all the work.
Ive been done with this man, just let it go.

The What Is It forum is not a social site to make friends nor a dating site yet it seems some members are using as such. And yes we get very very serious about making the correct ID. And yes TN WIT forum has a great reputation that we need to protect. I almost quit myself with some of the new member comments turning TN into a joke and I predicted the future erosion of this forum.

We dont want to lose any valuable members such as creskol so please do not quit. Several members have come to your defense including kuger, CBG and myself. I dont know you personaly creskol but I know you are absolutely needed here and I learn from you. However we also need new members and Im sure the owners want to attract new members and everybody has something to offer.

My advice to the new members would be not to criticise so much. We have been at it for a long time and we know what we are doing and yes we take this forum very serious.. Maybe we will try to be nicer but nice is not the main objective on this forum. It comes second to making the correct ID.

This is not Todays Finds where a proper response would be "nice find." Here we can call a spade a spade or a fake if we see it. Its the only forum where we can call it like we see it.

i agree Big C, you guys are the Bomb when it comes to knowledge , and i have noticed several times new members join to get a item IDed then insult the person because it is not what they wanted to hear , now i am not commenting on this thread i am talking about others .
I also hope Creskol does not quit over this , he and all you vets are needed here and are a big part of Tnet.
i am truely impressed with the stuff i see on here with the Vets IDing things that i have no idea what they could be ...
but i also hope you guys can bite your tounge when a neophyte like my self makes a guess and makes a fool out of my self,,lol
i would never insult some one for telling me i am wrong as long as they do not say it in a way to insult me .

Everyone has something to add as long as they stick to the ID. Try not to take opposing views as personal and myself I will try to be nicer..

So its looking like its not an official military item but its not over til its over and anyone can add any research or opinions. Opinions should be backed by a picture, link or reference. Looking forward to the photois from HutSiteDigger. Dont forget front and back.

Not to sound like an idiot how would I make measurements on this object?

RD, Lay a ruler across the top, and measure from left to right, and do the same with the shaft from top to bottom. :) Breezie

No, RelicDude, I didn't forget about you. It took me this long to gather up my antique shirt studs, which are pictured below the post. As you can see they are different sizes, shapes, and materials. The shanks range from 1/8" to 5/8" long. The faces range from 1/4" to 1/2" inch. The face of yours is almost 3/4" in diameter, which I think is pretty large to be a shirt stud. Yours is more in the range of cuff link size, so my best thought is a cuff link.

checking into Breezie's shirt stud idea, for the op , i found some info on how those were made
maybe in a few days i can find more about the machine, and hopefully some more examples of
the shirt studs/cuff-links

1882
In 1882 George Krementz invented a machine that was based on a Civil War cartridge shell. It would mass
produce one-piece buttons and cuff links very cheaply, which further enabled everyone to enjoy what was
once the exclusive domain of the wealthy and privileged

I believe I have a button with a Krementz backmark.
