Found this at a colonial homesite/plantation over the weekend. It resembles a civil war breast plate in size. Any ideas?

There is a regiment number in the globe. It is hard to make out in the OP's picture but it is there. I can clearly make out the 7 but my old eyes are having trouble with the second one. I see a 1, 2,7 and 8!

Yea, I see it now that the cobwebs in my eyes are gone.
