FINAL FINAL UPDATE: Even more information uncovered!




FINAL UPDATE:

NEW PICS OF A SWEET BUTTON!





I went back to the mansion today and did I mention that targets were getting fewer and fewer?

Well, it certainly was true today. Just 3 hours, but, here's the take:






I did find one decent target though.






I noticed this had some gilt showing so I isolated it in it's own little baggie until I could get it home.
I honestly didn't know what it might be other than a nice button. I don't know buttons very well so it might be a more recent version but still!

I initially toothpicked the back a bit to see if I could read any backmark.



All it says is Extra Quality. (but I had no idea just how well this one was made! )

Here's what I started with:



Now, once I started on the front it became very
apparent that this had a LOT of gilt left!

After about an hour and a half of very gently toothpicking, this is the result:




I don't know how old. It was my ONLY find today. But, somehow, I'm happy!

That IS a "GOOD" Civil War issue. Definitely not post war.

To me it looks like a Virginia State Police jacket button. Not trying to throw anyone off on age or anything else by saying that. My father was a Va. state trooper for 35 years and the button brings back memories of my father working when I was a child.
