FINAL UPDATE:

NEW PICS OF A SWEET BUTTON!

I went back to the mansion today and did I mention that targets were getting fewer and fewer? :)

Well, it certainly was true today. Just 3 hours, but, here's the take:

I did find one decent target though.

I noticed this had some gilt showing so I isolated it in it's own little baggie until I could get it home.
I honestly didn't know what it might be other than a nice button. I don't know buttons very well so it might be a more recent version but still!

I initially toothpicked the back a bit to see if I could read any backmark.

All it says is Extra Quality. (but I had no idea just how well this one was made! :) )

Here's what I started with:

Now, once I started on the front it became very
apparent that this had a LOT of gilt left!

After about an hour and a half of very gently toothpicking, this is the result:

I don't know how old. It was my ONLY find today. But, somehow, I'm happy! :)

Thanks for peeking!

Wow I'm jealous that's incredible  Great find!!!

I'm a little confused. Does the following:

"Scovill produced ca 1860, (ExtraQ01)."

mean this is pre-war? :icon_scratch:

I'm not the button person, but I want you to check out this site:

Hopefully one of the experts will weigh-in on whether it is Civil War or pre-Indian Wars.

It is an BEAUTIFUL button and congratulations on finding and cleaning it. Breezie

Sic Semper Tyrannis...

Latin for "Thus always to tyrants."

Its also not only just the Seal of Virginia, but the official Motto of the Commonwealth of Virginia.

WHAT, any more info on the exact date of your button? :) Breezie

I was searching for information on a button I found and I found it. This is exactly like mine. At least the design is like mine. But wow! This one sure puts mine to shame! I'm glad I can't show it yet. I'm still learnning. This actually came out oif the ground???? Wow. I thought I knew stuff but looks like I better just watch and learn for a while! I m impressed by all the wondeful finds here! Wow!

Well worth the effort! You only have to do it once then have a great button forever.

Nice Find! Like it says "Extra Quality". The better made items of any time period always last a bit longer.

What a beautiful artifact. Great job cleaning it up and congrats for making a great discovery.

That button is sweet!!!!!

THAT'S how ya do it . . .

Wow! That is awesome! Congrats!

Don't know how I missed this post before, but glad I came across it. I didn't look at that link posted to see the worth, because I know no matter the amount, something like your beautiful find will not ever bring as much as the sentimental worth to yourself. People always assume we do this for financial gain, when the truth is most of us just really enjoy history, the surprise of what we have found and what we may find. If I were to cash in all my finds of the year, it probably wouldn't pay the gasoline bill I spent in getting to my hunts for one month. I would not sell those for my annual salary though. Since this is my first year in, I have made several first finds and they have great value to me only. Hope you find something that makes you forget that button for just a little while!
