FINAL UPDATE:

NEW PICS OF A SWEET BUTTON!

I went back to the mansion today and did I mention that targets were getting fewer and fewer? :)

Well, it certainly was true today. Just 3 hours, but, here's the take:

I did find one decent target though.

I noticed this had some gilt showing so I isolated it in it's own little baggie until I could get it home.
I honestly didn't know what it might be other than a nice button. I don't know buttons very well so it might be a more recent version but still!

I initially toothpicked the back a bit to see if I could read any backmark.

All it says is Extra Quality. (but I had no idea just how well this one was made! :) )

Here's what I started with:

Now, once I started on the front it became very
apparent that this had a LOT of gilt left!

After about an hour and a half of very gently toothpicking, this is the result:

I don't know how old. It was my ONLY find today. But, somehow, I'm happy! :)

Thanks for peeking!

That's a great button!

Scouts out!

That's a beautiful postwar button there. Nice dig!

That is a great looking button. Congrats.

Yep, "post war" notwithstanding, it IS a beautiful button! Considering it had been buried for however long.

I know that everything tends to be measured in relation to the time when Americans had a tragic disagreement among themselves. But, very, very few buttons come back to us in this incredible shape! I don't care which "war" it pre-post-during dates. Even the last war to end all wars ended over two thirds of a century ago.

This button came back to us in almost all it's former glory! Now, to me, THAT is TRULY special! No matter if it is "post war".
By the by, to which war were you referring?

Thanks for the comment.

Came out really nice! Congrats.............Hogge

You probably know this already, but that is the Great Seal of the Commonwealth of Virginia File:Seal of Virginia.svg - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Also what John Wilkes Booth supposedly yelled when he shot Lincoln, just before leaping and breaking his leg.

Gorgeous button!

Yep, I found that info too. Always welcome to have someone helping though.

I think I found the button here:

Button backmarks, "Extra Quality".

Number B5008 near bottom.

Here's some text quoted from the page.

""Extra Quality" backmarks were generic stock backmarks or trade name backmarks denoting quality. There are many variations of this backmark, uncertainty as to who the actual producers were of some of them, so all are listed here.

ExtraQ01, (22mm)
Backmark: "EXTRA / (star) QUALITY (star)" dm small letters between two rings of dots, a faint inner ring sometimes appears which may have been formed when the shank was installed producing a slight depression around the shank, Scovill produced ca 1860, (ExtraQ01).
Tice page 71, Scovill Manufacturing item count 58 [B7-10]."

Thanks for the help!

Awesome job cleaning that beautiful button. Nice piece of history.

Thanks a lot for the nice words!

I just wish I could capture just how GOOD this button looks in person! My camera is sucking, trying to capture all the reflections. It is really, really pretty! Especially considering it was 7-8 inches down!

HH!

I'm a little confused. Does the following:

"Scovill produced ca 1860, (ExtraQ01)."

mean this is pre-war? :icon_scratch:

Nice find. And kudos on taking the amount of time that you did to clean it up right.
