WHITE'S MXT (and man is she hot!)
Hey all,
Found this one in a ghost town in Missouri. I was a bit overwhelmed because I am new to the hunt and I didn't realize in all my excitement that I had my 4" coil instead of my 8" coil (yes I was that excited to get out of my front yard for the first time...lol). So, here I am in an open field with a four inch coil and lots of land to cover. I dug some old rail road spikes, a few peices of horse shoe, and a million nails (no pull tabs oddly enough, even with no discrimination). Then, unexpectedly, I got a signal that sounded like R2D2 making a baby. I almost didn't dig it because I was smoked from the hike/cold, but I went to all metal mode and realized the object was fairly large, and the depth readout was only 4", so I said what the heck, I am too new to be considering not digging something. So, I got to digging and saw yellow paint. Strange... Finally I got it out of the ground, cleaned it off and this is what it said "Riley Bros That's Oil Gauranteed Lubrication." It was a sign from an old shop. I decided to give it to the person that introduced me to the town, and forgot about it. Well, tonight I saw the sign again, and thought about doing some research...turns out a similar one (in much better condition) went for $250 on ebay last month!!! I told my friend that and she tried to give it back, but I said no deal, a gift is a gift! So, here's your sign, hope you all enjoy it! It's from the 50's...

Re: I saw the sign...

Nice find! Always great to recover a little bit of history before it rusts into oblivion.

Re: I saw the sign...

Very nice find there...have yet to find any old signs. My friend who introduced me to this hobby last year just said always dig all of your signals. You need to learn your machine and you never know what you will find. I love the hobby and have made some good friends to boot.

Re: I saw the sign...

R2D2 making a baby...I'll have to listen for that one on my metal detector!! :D

The sign is great, has lots of character and I'm sure the people who have it appreciate it.

Never know what that funny beep is gonna be...love this hobby!

Re: I saw the sign...

Thanks for the info and comments peeps...
here's the link for the one that went for 250. I thought it was a different sign because it said "porcelain" then I realized that's the PAINT not the hole sign and it is the same sign...anyway, learnin' as I go.

Re: I saw the sign...

I'd be very careful to not use corrosive cleaning fluids... clean the dirt and leave it alone.

If you need to seal it with something because it's going to be outside I'd wait for advice.

I know - not much help... :-\

Re: I saw the sign...

Thanks Montana Jim,
I don't think she's going to put it outside, but I think I need to seal and stop the oxidation...I actually don't know anything about this...lol Thanks for the tip, I think I am going to go post this in another forum, I know TN has to have a forum for that...lol, they have a forum for EVERYTHING!
I'll post more when it's done.

yes, young one the force is strong in you

Re: I saw the sign...need help with preservation!!!

You can probably clean that with Naval Jelly, sold at most grocery stores. It's a pink jelly that will eat off the rust but not the paint. We used to use this to clean beer cans back in the day. Congrats on a cool sign.

Re: I saw the sign...need help with preservation!!!

I can help you with this one. I buy and sell lots of antiques and have had many old porcelain signs that needed cleaning. Fist let me say that there is no paint on that sign. It is a baked on porcelain finish kind of like enamel. You can't rub the "paint" off by cleaning it. I have always taken some extra fine steel wool and used that to clean that crusted on dirt off and then used chrome polish to do the final cleaning. I'm sure you're all thinking "no way that will scratch the heck out of it" but trust me, it doesn't. Use the steel wool to clean the rusted spots where the porcelain has come off too. You can spray it with some WD40 after you are done to give it a little protection against further oxidation. You'll be surprised how good it will look.

Just to give you an idea how bullet proof those signs are, I've had some that were painted over and I have used chemical stripper to get that paint off without damaging the original sign.

Just make sure you use extra fine steel wool (OOO or finer). Good luck! Post pictures once it's cleaned.

Re: I saw the sign...need help with preservation!!!

PS. Make SURE that it is a porcelain sign before using my cleaning method. Your picture isn't quite close enough for me to tell.

Here she is about 3/4 the way done with the cleaning process. Thanks a lot for your tips everyone, and a special thanks to INCA, steel wool is working GREAT!!! Anyway, here's the pics!
