Well folks, I am in LA on business for 2 weeks, and I had a weekend to kill, so I decided to head north to Jamestown, CA. I booked a panning and sluicing package for Saturday...before the artic front came through. SO, Saturday morning, I wake up, head across the street to the prospecting shop, and the guy tells me the creek is frozen solid, it's the first time he had ever seen it that way. So I waited until about 1 pm and convinced the guy to let me head down to see what I could find. He didn't charge me because he thought I was crazy lol. The water was probably 40 degrees and just painful. I only lasted about an hour and a half before my hands couldnt take it anymore. It was a very disappointing day to say the least.

Sunday, I was supposed to leave town around noon to get back to LA at a decent hour, but I decided I wasn't going leave Jamestown empty handed, especially since it will be a long time, if ever, that I will get to come back. Walked over and spoke with the guy and he said lets go. The creek had thawed, but was still bitterly cold. This time I used a sluicebox, which saved a bit of the cleaning of material (hands in cold water). I sluiced about 3 buckets of dirt, then panned the material left in the box. To my surprise, there was "color" as he put it. Of course, I can't retire, but I wouldn't trade the weekend for anything.

The first pic is Pyramid Lake, I had to stop and take a picture, it was amazing. The second of course, is the The Take. Not much, but worth the pain. Thanks for looking!!

Awesome!!!! You just lived one of my dreams. Maybe this year!

I admire you braving the cold, frozen creek, and my hands ache just thinking about it.
so glad it paid off for you

Thats a pretty good amount for 3 buckets worth!!

Did you screen the material down before putting it through the sluice? Quarter inch screening perhaps?

Thats a lot more than I've ever got with a lot more work.

Good deal for you, and congrats!

Beautiful!!!

Took a pick and a shovel to a pile of creek rocks and dirt, screened it first, 1/2 or 3/4 inch screen I think, then put the remainder through the sluice. Not only was the creek frozen, the dirt was frozen and was like cement. I had to literally pound clumps of dirt with a rock to break it up. It was great!!!
