I dusted off my sluice and other equipment and im taking my buddy and our sons out for a day of panning and sluicing... I need a bit of a re-education! Im a lil rusty... Here in az our river has alot of beach type sand with lots of black sand. We have plenty of water to run with. Wich type of moss should be used and why? Take a look at what i got and let me know what ya think. By the way it'll be in my keenes 50 inch sluice

I'd most likely use both. Laying the miners moss over the carpet should work quite well
for the small stuff.

Thanx alot..... I have too many hobbies to keep track of!! I just want the boys to have a good time... Be nice if they find a lil color! Get'em hooked while they're young!!

Use capet as doesn't load up -that huge amount of black sands will fill moss in no time and then adios your gold out the end-take'm both and PROVE IT to yourself, then moss will be relagated like mine---to boot cleaning--John

Thanx..... Ill let ya know how our trip goes. My buddy has the same sluice. I think ill do a side by side comparison.

A side by side is a great idea. See for yourself which works better. To be a fair test though you'll need to make sure that everything is equal. Angle, water flow feed rates etc.

Over the years I've used both carpet and moss and have found that the moss will load up if you don't have a fast flow through the sluice. Flow fast enough to keep the moss from loading up will blow gold out the end of a carpeted box.

What part of Az are ya in Bry? I also agree with the "Start em young" thing as we're teaching our 6 year old grand daughter. She's got the attention span of a gnat at times but seems to really like looking for gold. Oh wait... females always like bright shiny things... lol

Im out of safford...... Southeast corner of az.... Smackdab in the middle of the dessert!!! Love it down here...

I set up a tub in the back yard and taught my 6 year old to pan. As soon as he seems board he goes and does something else. Usually comes back about 5 min later. After about 4 or 5 days of buying the tub he pans better than some guys I see out on the stream.

Thats too cool!!!!! My son is 15 wich means he gets to cary more stuff when we go out and play in the desert now! Thats super neat panning at such a young age... We got some good spots picked out so with a little luck( fingers crossed) we can see a lil color!

Nawww.... You're not in the corner Bry. We are!!!! You can't get any further south OR east in Arizona than where Robi and I are at. From our deck we look into New Mexico AND Mexico!!! I know what ya mean about loving it though. I moved here after spending 7 years in Georgia! YUCK!!!!! The humidity there was the pits!

Maybe one of these days we should meet up near Dos Cabesas and tag team the area. It is just east of Wilcox and a known producing area.

Sounds good irishman... I hunted the dos cabezas a few years back... Im less then an hour away from there....im sure a trip would be highly possible...

We changed our plans a bit.... We're going into the gila box... i know that mountain produces!!! I built the mine on the other side!!!

Are you thinking north or south side of D.C. mountain Bry? We've check out the south side a bit and am thinking that a drywasher would do good there or a recirc system. Found a little nugget in the wash right next to the road. I've also got a copy of a USGS report on the area in PDF format. Shoot me an email addy and I'll send you a copy of it if you'd like one.
