Well today was the day. I went back for an after work hunt to my newest field permission. I went back to the area where we had found some flat buttons on Saturday. Did not find a single flat button there today but Im still in disbelief of what I did find. Was finding some old junk when I got a bouncy low tone. I saw the reeded edge in the clod and at first thought gold plated clock gear or kids gold ring. Soon realized what I had and could not believe it. It was hard to focus after that but I did later find a KG III but who cares. I found a 1852 gold dollar!!!

I'm kind of surprised this isn't already making it's way across the top yet. One heck of nice find!

I know not all gold coins make banner but the history of the gold dollar is fascinating. It was the only gold coin to see any significant circulation for everyday transactions especially on the east coast but only for a brief period in the early 1850s. Brought about by the influx of California gold and its effect on raising the cost of silver. It took the place of silver halves and dollars in this period which could be melted for profit. The large cent became dominant too as half dimes and dimes disappeared quickly as well. This ended when the weight of silver coins was reduced in 1853 and production increased. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gold_dollar Its very small size was also an obstacle to its acceptance. $1 was obviously a lot of money to lose but Im glad somebody did just that:)

Wow, what a beautiful coin. It seems that those with the most luck are the ones that work the hardest. There are not many people who put more time into our hobby than you do , and I couldn't be happier for you. I hope you can now find another one.

Thanks for the kind words. My goal this year was to find my first capped bust silver. Gold coin will do though. Just very fortunate to live in an area with lots of history and being in the right spots to find it. Honestly, very few spots that I have chose to hunt failed to produce. Putting in lots of swing time with only minimal research has worked for me to this point

Now i know why the golden $1 coins i get suck so bad...

Nice. Type I gold dollar is the smallest diameter(13mm) ever minted. It actually makes the half dime look big. Its pretty thick though so it rings up a bit higher than my smaller gold rings. Hope to get back out there tomorrow in between all the rain we’ve been having

the wow factor! congrats

Thanks. Seems the only place this type of coin turns up is usually a site down south associated with Civil War activity or found converted to jewelry later on. Mine was neither so yes pretty pumped
