All Treasure Hunting
Hello All!! Well I have been watching and loving everyone's finds. I was on the way to my storage unit when I saw a yard sale sign. So being the avid yard sale junkie I could not say no so I stopped in. This old couple had a whole steel morton barn filled with antiques. After looking I found a few paintings that I found interesting, as I brought them up to the couple they had this piece tucked behind them. I could not believe this what a treasure and a work of art. This piece of furniture is a Flower stand(I think) it is completely hand carved and a period piece. I believe it is either late 1700's to 1800's piece, found in the good ole' state of Pennsylvania. I am still trying to find out who possibly made this beautiful piece??? The wood appears to be a mix of possibly chestnut, ,maple, walnut and mahogany. The main turnings show non-uniformity and are different from one-another indicating that this piece was completely hand turned. The little turnings are made of chestnut and mahogany I believe. The pieces were quartersawn reduced in size by angle cuts and glued together, then lathed. This produced a two colored turning. The cabriolet legs are hand sawn. The diamonds in-lays on the top are maple. The first tier, the main diamond is made of mahogany with diamond maple inlay around the top. The border of that diamond consist's of angle micro hand cut and glue together chicklets made with mahogany and maple. On the outside of the first tier plate is more diamond maple in-lay. This piece is a gorgeous piece and a work of art that took someone a long time and patience to build. Whoever it was he was a master furniture maker. I believe this piece is probably a pennsylvania piece. If anyone could tell me anything about it and possible value I would really appreciate it. I have consulted a antique dealer who specializes in furniture and he states that it is completely hand done and that I did well!! He stated he has never seen a piece like it. He stated the possible age that is what I am going on. I hope that this piece becomes the first piece of furniture to hit the banner(wink, wink)!!!

Crusader, I have viewed alot of your posts and respect the advice you give others. Thank you for you words of advice and I hope you accept mine. I have gotten word from a Mr. O'brian who works for the Keno Bros. He stated it is a late 19th century accent table. Although he did not elaborate on it's origin he stated that it was a nicely inlaid piece. Breezie was right on the money. Well Done!!! I thank you all for your wisdom and research. They accessed a value of $750 for it. Not bad for a garage find!!! I'll be posting more pictures in the Indian Artifacts category. Happy hunting all and thanks to all that came to my aid on this matter!!!................................GTP.................

Congratulations! :headbang: You are the king of yard sales!

And you are the king of morons!! :headbang: Get :help:!!........................Get-The-Point :icon_thumleft:

I seem to remember a news article about a table similar to this washing up on the shore of the Delaware from a sunken British war ship off of Fort Mercer in National Park NJ.

When you post more pictures, please put a link here.

yawn at you guys, nice table i think it is awesome and cant date it anyway.

This table is an intersting find for anyone that appreciates fine woodwork and detail in furniture construction. :icon_thumright: The table is clean, decorative and functional; it also combines a number of different period styles of construction. It's made of old solid wood and will hold it's value much longer than any "new" piece of furniture ever will!

It would fit nicely in an Eastlake or Victorian period furniture setting and will only appreciate in value. :notworthy: My motto in buying antiques . . . buy what you like and don't listen to anyone elses opinion accept your own!

Congratulations on your find Get-The-Point!

Congratulations on your find Get-The-Point!

Thank you Antiquariun. I thought is was a beautiful piece and one I had to have. I saw the level of craftmanship and knew that it was a very unique piece. I especially love the two tone turnings along with the chicklet border in maple and mahogany. There was alot of help on this piece but it also brought un-warranted insults and games from those who seem biased towards anything not metal detector found!! I hope with all my replies and statements i posted, that it opened there eyes to other treasures other than a coin they dug up! I said it once and i'll say it again that there are other treasures out there other than dug up coins and
I tried to show it with this post. I never would have imagined certain people on here knocking this find down, but it happened. I kind of hope they stick to there metal detecting as it will leave all the more valuable stuff out there for us to find!!! I also showed a painting on here that I purchased at a yard sale. This painting was done by Guiseppi Miti-Zanetti(and old master 1880's) and was looked at by Sotheby's and appraised at over 5k if it were restored, as is, it was valued at 3k but was apparently not banner worthy. I thought it should be, but like I said this site seems to be more for coins, and not a true treasure site. I have seen coins with a value of less than 1k hit the banner. Here I find a valuable painting that I paid pennies towards its true value and it received nothing. Let's see what kind of response this draws out..................................GTP.....................................

Wait. Someone from Keno Bros, assessed this table for $750? As a licensed personal property appraiser specializing in 18th and 19th century art and furniture, I respectfully disagree. It's a terrific table and I admire your passion for antiques, but its value is right in the $200 range.

I respect your credentials, but i am just going on what I have been told by them. It was an associate not the Keno bro's themselves, so I do not know what his credentials are but I would have to lean towards his word as the Keno bro's would not hire anyone not aware of current market values and without the capability of accessing antique furniture. They elaborated on the design and stated if was masterfully crafted, and gave an "estimated" price range on it. I have been told on here by other people that the price is irrelevant as it could be sold for a high value depending on the certain attributes that the piece exhibits. I am just pleased with the table as it was a beautiful find. I also respect the words that were given in response to my request to the Keno Bro's. Thank you for your input...............................GTP......................

I'm with you here. It's a $200 piece plain and simple. It's a nice piece, but not a showstopper. I'm guessing the person that emailed him back is just some kid out of college thinking they know it all about furniture.

My estimates are always based on what similar items are selling for. $200 is the current market value for your piece based on what similar pieces have recently sold for in auction houses nationwide. Again, with respect, I'm thrown by the statement, "I have been told on here by other people that the price is irrelevant as it could be sold for a high value depending on the certain attributes that the piece exhibits." I'd say price is irrelevant if you have a personal attachment to the piece and don't plan on selling. Otherwise, your piece, while attractive, will fetch around $200. Would you mind posting the message Mr. O'brian sent? I'm intrigued by his opinion especially provided it's something the Keno name must stand behind. Hope you're not taking any of this the wrong way -- just trying to understand how a professional opinion could be light years off the mark. None of this detracts from the beauty of your stand, of course. :icon_thumright:

Are u kidding me?? Is this not a treasure hunting site? Does this site have a hyperlink to a section dedicated to paintings?? The answer to both would be yes. So are you serious about what setting I had my metal detector on?? Give me a freakin break!!! I never in my life thought a bunch of people on here would act like this. All I can say is your pretty juvenile to even ask that statement with a quoted reply. OR you cannot read!! It has to be one or the other. So which is it?? Are u juvenile or are you just an idiot?? Unbelievable how some of you have acted!! Again thanks to all of you for your opinions. To the people who are dumb enough to think the only treasure you can find is in the ground and insult those who find something while not detecting, all I have to say is this board should review and suspend all of you for your insulting comments. You insult this forum with your juvenile comments meant to insult people!!

I am done with this post!!! I respect all those who came correct and answered my much needed answers. I guess I have to get a metal detector to be (IN) the club. It is too bad that the people who knew nothing about this piece decided to chime in and insult it. Ignorance is stupid people wake up and know that knowledge is power!!!

Quoted because it is just too great.

This is a treasure HUNTING site. Not a treasure BUYING site. I picked up a 73 piece set of sterling the other day for $50. Do I think that's banner worthy? Heck no. Had I found it in the ground in a cache, then I think THAT would make it banner worthy.

Many people gave you correct information about what the piece is and what it is approximately worth. You seem to think everybody is wrong because YOU have placed a higher value on the item. You have a personal attachment to it and it shows. Take it to an auction and see what it fetches.

I'm replying to this!!! As this last post testifies to the ignorance of some of the members of this board and there little click of detectorists. I have nothing against anyone on this board yet these people feel the need to segregate those who do not have a detector. I do however plan on getting one as I always wanted to do that..........

First let me clue you, I have thanked everyone for there opinions except for those that made fun of my find!!!So do not state a non-fact by trying to say i insulted everyone who posted with there opinions. That is an out-right lie made to illicit a reaction from the rest of the group(CHILDISH).........

Second Clue for the ignorant kid. When I am going out and searching yard sale after yard sale, Well that is hunting!!! When I go out into the fields to search for Indian Artifacts, that is hunting!! Stop with your, "ah this message board is all about digging not buying crap," as it is not!! Treasure hunting is hunting, and sir that can be done in many fashions. Do not try and bring everyone else into your childish reply. I have listened and thanked each and everyone who took this post seriously. I have also attacked those who thought it was necessary to say sarcastic comments like, "How deep was your find? or "What setting was your detector at?" Or "I can give a million Rupees for your find," Clear attempts to be sarcastic and ridicule my find. Everyone of you should be ashamed at how your acting, trying to control what posts are allowed on this site. Un-believable!!! Ridiculing people until they stop posting. You ignorant select few are turning away new members who want to learn about what they have or what they found or what they purchased at a sale. How dare any of you knock what anyone finds on here whether it be found in a field, in a basement or at a yard sale if it holds history it is a treasure!!!! That is the true representation of this site or there would not be links to every type of find on this site!!!! Are you clued in now to the current ethics of this site!!!!..............Grow up!!!....................GTP>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Although I understand what you are saying & it makes sense. Don't let it get to you, life's too short to get this upset over a few sarcastic words. Brush it off & move on. Sometimes I have a British 'moment' with the sarcastic remarks, but I don't mean anything by it, other than to make people laugh. The more you say, the more there is to 'pick' at.
How deep was your find? - just say 8-10inches under a pile of books
What setting was your detector at? - Had it in 'All-Wood'

Smile :icon_thumright:

Guess I also need to clarify something. I'm one of the ones who got on the kids case who was here bashing your find but I'm also one who asked "how deep it was"... It was a JOKE. While I'm fairly new here compared to some of the dusty old critters, I have hung out on internet forums for many years. I like to compare it to a group of people sitting around a coffee shop, bar, campfire, etc (whatever is your choice for relaxation). Innocent JOKING with eachother is something we do from time to time. Bashing people just for sport like the kid was doing is an entirely different thing and is rude. Learning how to tell the difference is important if you plan on hanging around many internet forums. I do have to say though that it's my opinion you had it in your head when you came here that your find was priceless (judging from the title), and you seemed to be only looking for responses that verified that thought. We all hope for that of course but it's rarely how it turns out. My best flea market score was a very surprising one. I bought an old GI Joe complete with rubber frogman suit & accessories for 3 bucks just as a joke. Put it on Ebay and it sold for $185 !! In any case have a great day and happy hunting whether it's in the ground, at flea markets, or wherever.

Although it might be amusing to people who have been on here a long time and know one another and understand how each person is after time, for a new member who does not know anyone it leads them to believe they are being made fun of for there find. This in turn will turn away new members. I hope you understand and allow a newbie to get to know all of you VETS before anyone ridicules them. My way of life is to respect all those and treat all with kindness.........................I hope to learn more from all of you.............................GTP :icon_thumright:

Strange thread. I opened it up and thought you may have robbed my house :laughing7: We have a piece that's almost exactly like this. We payed around 300.00 for it.
