As some of you know I had surgery on my right hand/wrist in late July. I figured that if I had to have the surgery, I'd schedule it in the summer when there are not as many opportunities to detect. Sunday I got out for only the second time since the surgery. I didn't set the world on fire, but I did manage to get a decent 1847 Large Cent, 5 flat buttons, and an intact suspender buckle in about 3 hours of hunting on an old standby site. It was good to get out swinging the coil and digging a few holes!

very glad to see ya back Steve!!Dang fine digs as well!!I have that exact suspender clip

Welcome back into the fold, Steve. Though you may not feel totally healed, it looks like you made a grand re-entry into the world of metal detecting. Nothing shabby about those finds, I particularly like the suspender buckle.

Thanks for all the well wishes on my surgery folks!

Wow! I think those finds are just what the doctor ordered to help you to a speedy recovery :-)

My shoulder usually bothers me big time after 6 or so hours.

Nice buckle, and a decent LC, nothing wrong with that dig.

Nice return hunt! Keep on getting better..
For an earlier option, try a sling or strap on the detector. 3 point harness could
Be the ticket..

This site has given up a nice variety of mid 19th century suspender clips. Last time there I found one with a running Buffalo. This one has a patent date on it but I can't quite make it out. Can you read it on yours?

Nice finds, I would love to find something that old. Good to see that there is stuff that old in western PA.

Nice finds, hope things go well with your recovery.

Glad to see you back in action! The forum has missed seeing your posts.

That's a good start with a nice LC and an excellent suspender clip.

Glad you're doing well,

Buck

Wow!!A Buffalo! That is too cool!I will have to look at mine for the date

Welcome back. That's quite an encore! I guess you don't believe in baby steps, lol. Wish you a full and speedy recovery. Thanks for sharing.

Steve...mine is not exactly a match to yours but real close....I never even noticed mine does say "Pat 1850".......I recently asked CC Hunter for clarification of when exactly these ring tab suspender buckles came into play, because somebody made the comment that they were 1870's and I have dug dug many in mid 19 th Cent. sites......guess I had my answer in my buckle box!!!mine is 3/4" wide as well, which I would not have figured a suspender would be that narrow.....but it is!!

that's nice rehab for the wrist, looks like an awesome colonial relic day to me, that buckle is awesome

This particular site dates from the 1830s to about 1900. I feel sure that those suspender clips were in use in the 1850s through the 1880s. I would be curious what CC Hunter says. Mine also looks like the patent date is 185?.

UGH! Those finds would have set MY world on fire! hahaha! Love that buckle!
Hope you're feeling up to speed soon. :)

My hunch is that clips like this came into vogue right around the CW. I have not dug any down here in LA, not a single one...which is strange. In short, I think that a post 1860 date is likely true, because if these were popular antebellum items I'd have found them in the material culture of pre-CW plantations here. If they were post CW items, then that might make sense that they are not dug here, as they would've been unnecessary purchases during the post-CW economic collapse.
