How do you grid an area?

??? ??? ???Hey guys/gals, how about metal coat hangers and pieces of tissue or string .
If you unravel the hangers and straighten them they should be long enough :-\.

I'm using Pennys, Duck taped to orange survey tape from home depot. I aslo mark spots that I may not want to dig Just Then with theses, so I can go back in a little while and dig several spots.

I use the flags at the end method for actual hunting but to mark where i stopped and need to start another day i use a can of cheap spray paint (w-mart $1.00) in a bright color

The Method I use works for me,I pick a small area and mark it off with the small orange cones you pick up at wal mart the kids use for skateboarding etc (or orange surveying flags) I put two down 4 feet apart then walk to the other end and put two more down,I sweep cone to cone and when I get to the end I move the 1st cone 4 feet on the other side of the 2nd cone, search cone 2 to 2 at the end I move cone 1 4 feet from cone 2, when im done I flip my 2 cones over the others and start a whole new area,I really cover an area good and find it easier working in smaller areas.when I leave for the day I use my GPS and mark my corners. It works unless you have kids around picking up your stuff or a curious dog that runs off with a cone.

Drop poker chips in one color and mark targets with another color then dig..

I have used the metal wire and cloth flags that you can buy with the PETSAFE fence system for pets. these flags are used to mark of the fence to give the pet a visual of the boundaries. I have some painted orange and I leave some white.

As was mentioned above in the thread, I frequently use the "spiral" method outward from a target. This works well if the site is wooded or really, really large. But if the site is manageable in size and grassy, I get a stake and a roll of string. The stake is a small metal stake with a loop on the end for tying the string. Before I hunt a section, I tap the stake lightly into the ground with my shovel, tie the loose end of the string onto the stake, and then let the string unwind from a spool as I hunt. (Bright fluorescent string works best) Then when I get to the other side of the field I lay the string down and continue back a swing's width away. I continue this for as many swing widths as I can without having to move the string. Then when I am getting too far away from the string I place the second stake and continue with a new sight-line as before. By the time I get too far away from that to judge whether or not I am still parallel with it, I am a good ways away from the first stake and its string sight-line. I simply walk back and grab the first stake and plant it a second time as the third sight line. This seems to work well, and it isn't much trouble at all. Only time unfortunate thing is winding the string back up at the end of the hunt, but I guess if you didn't want to do that string is really cheap to buy.

I'm currently searching a 10 acre plot for "Grandads" cache. We Take the flags and place them 100 foot apart (parralell to yesterdays line of travel), stretch bright pink string between them for a reference line and start detecting. Get to the other end and place a bright plastic golf tee down to mark the outer limits of your swing turn around and go back. At the end of your day, place two or three tees in the ground at both ends. Tommorrow place your flags at these points and start again.

Found tons of nails, hinges, what looks like a brake master cylinder and more junk. Will try to post pics tommorrow. Be warned......these are scans of printed pictures originally taken with a digital camera by a non-photographer. Read poor quality.

When I search a freshwater lake swim area early in the morning before the swimmers get there, I use a small bass fishing float or two. I mark off an area and circle around it. I then drop or toss the other one out to unwind. It helps to wear polerized glasses too for cutting the glare on the water so you can see the bottom to pick up those paper dollar bills that get washed out of pockets. You'd be suprised on the amount of cash you can go home with.

Golf tees? Now that's a great idea about how to mark the site for your return trip! I'll have to remember that one.

Thanks,

use bright colored tees as wood toned sort of blend in ::)

Sheesh, just go to your friendly Home Depot and get a handful of the red flag mounted wire markers - about 14 - 16" high -. Then simply stick one in the ground at the start point and the other at your furtherest aim point Just head for the flag in front of you.

Of course as you fiinish up each sweep, you will reach down, pick up the just used alignment flag, pivot to the right, or left, stick it into the ground again. Continue this for each pass in both directions.

You will automatically be advancing your red flag markers each pass in the drection of your projected search The distance moved will be depend upon your detector and what you are looking for.

A simple accurate and non-destructive technique that can be used anywhere, including legal grassy areas.

This is a method I am using to search an old ghost town, no buildings standing. My flags are fiberglass instead of wire.
