Holy Cow....I am still shakin'....what did I find?

I just got home and ran these two coins under some water to get most of the dirt off. One of these is what I believe they call a "copper" from the best I can tell it may possibly say 1775 on it....but cant make 100% sure

The other one appears to have some type of crest on it, and then figures and objects ....is this an old hammered silver coin?

Anybody?

Can I clean the copper so I can see it better or would that devalue it? I put a nasty scratch on the copper when it was recovered...

Thanks for your help.

Re: Holy Cow....I am still shakin'....what did I find?

The second coin appears to be a counterfeit spanish coin (contemporary counterfeit, not a new fake). They passed for the real thing in many cases back in the day.

If it is a pewter counterfeit, I don't think I'd touch it with olive oil.

The coin looks like it has been washed in water. Please read Don in SJ or my post about the peroxide method of cleaning. Water can cause you to lose detail, and it is irreversible. That is what looks like has happened to the copper coin.

Thats something I didn't consider on this one, so looks like it might be 2 contemporary counterfiets :icon_thumright: Interesting - I have a contemporary piece of 8 but a much later one, not seen an early one before. I hope it is, that would be a good find in my books. A very early fake :headbang:

Little John:
A full weighted piece of eight would weigh over 27 gms.
Yours at under 6 can't be a piece of eight.
It might be a 2R or a replica 8R.

I have little knowledge of these (found 0). Does it look like a 2R?

Re: Holy Cow....I am still shakin'....what did I find?

I have been collecting pictures of copies, fakes and counterfeit Spanish cobs as kind of a hobby for several years.. The reason being that no 2 are identical.

I havent been updating my database lately. But I still have the collected pics from old eBay sales, members finds, etc. but in no particular order. Ill have to search for a match. My first thought was copy but I need to take a better look at this. This may be a tough one.

I would suggest to also post in our Spanish cob section. We have other very knowlegable members there that may not frequent the What Is It forum.

I dont know if it has been asked but the first question should be "is it silver"?

The markings are not precise. I dont know if it has been eaten away or just a bad casting. :dontknow:

That weight is smaller than a two reale, but that would be a positive thing because there's a better chance it being authentic.

If it's real (no play on words intended), it's too heavy to be a 1R (about 3.4g max) and not heavy enough to be be more than a two real (about 6.85 grams). Being underweight would be more the norm; caused by 'clipping' and deterioration.

When I get a chance I will look into this further but in a quick search of my files reveals that this design has been cast copied in several variations in silver, pewter and in pot metal. So the first question would be is it silver?

Here are some similar examples of castings. Look closely for the words COPY.

The lions are funky. I dont know if its a poor casting or corroded out.

How do I find out if it is silver?

Good question. One way would be to ask a pawn shop to test it. I can usually recognize silver by looking at it but is hard to say from a picture. If it turns out not to be silver, it could still be a 300 year old counterfeit.

Even if it is counterfeit, it's still cool. Insight to human nature even long ago. still historical, with a twist ::)

I am thinking about taking it to a jeweler and having a necklace pendant made out of it. Counterfeit, legit or whatever in between it may be, it is a find that I will always remember and I think it's cool as heck.

Sure looks like a cast, regardless if it tests out as silver

Where and how deep did you find it? Can we see a pic of the edges?

Re: Holy Cow....I am still shakin'....what did I find?

Edge of a farmers field 7 1/2 inches down. It was approximately 6 feet away from the copper which was 9 inches deep. I will get some pictures of the edges up tonight. Thanks
