Holy Cow....I am still shakin'....what did I find?

I just got home and ran these two coins under some water to get most of the dirt off. One of these is what I believe they call a "copper" from the best I can tell it may possibly say 1775 on it....but cant make 100% sure

The other one appears to have some type of crest on it, and then figures and objects ....is this an old hammered silver coin?

Anybody?

Can I clean the copper so I can see it better or would that devalue it? I put a nasty scratch on the copper when it was recovered...

Thanks for your help.

Looks like a cob coin from the Potosi mint in Peru (initial 'P' left of crest).
It's weight in grams will help ID its denomination:
About 27 grams for an 8 reales, then halve that for a 4 reales, etc.
Don.....

It looks exactly like a 1654 piece of eight I found a picture of one on kellyco's website and everything that I can see is an identical match

I found both coins at the edge of a farm field about 6 feet apart. South Central Pennsylvania.

fingers crossed, it might just be the picture but looks a bit suspect. Hopefully it is the real deal as an '8' is hard to come by, so starting your spanish silver collection with that one is a real winner :headbang:

BCH - has a database of copies/fakes & will be able to give a much better opinion on this potentially amazing find :icon_thumright:

Forgot the Copper is a British Geo III Halfpenny, many of these were counterfeited during the 18th century which is what this might be. We need a weight?

Here is the picture i was referring to

It may well be a copy, heck I dont know....I believe the copper is legit and I am going to try and clean it up so I can get some better identification on it.

Ok I will get a weight as soon as I get it cleaned. I have it soaking in olive oil right now. These are my first "old" finds, actually the first time I have hunted outside of some kind of park. I sure like the Tesoro Tejon!!!

Odds are its a contemporary counterfiet, either way its part of your history & over 200 years old.

Agree, 2nd picture has me suspect. I would feel better about it if it was found with all old finds.

Re: Holy Cow....I am still shakin'....what did I find?

The mintmark P meaning either Potosi (from at least 1652) or Peru, since Potosi was part of the viceroyalty of Peru. (Sedwick page 46; 3rd edition).
During most of the Spanish colonial period, this territory was called Upper Peru or Charcas and was under the administration of the Viceroyalty of Peru, which included most of Spain's South American colonies. After declaring independence in 1809, 16 years of war followed before the establishment of the Republic, named for Simón Bolívar, on August 6, 1825. (Wikipedia).
