Get US out! of the United Nations :
At the founding meeting of The John Birch Society in 1958, Robert Welch gave a stern warning to the attendees about the plan by our political elites to surrender American sovereignty to international organizations, such as the United Nations (see the first one minute of the video at left):
"A part of that plan, of course, is to induce the gradual surrender of American sovereignty, piece by piece and step by step, to various international organizations -- of which the United Nations is the outstanding but far from the only example -- while the Communists are simultaneously and equally gradually getting complete working control of such organizations.”
In September 1961 President John F. Kennedy presented a disarmament plan at a general meeting of the United Nations. This plan was published by the State Department that same month with the title, "Freedom from War: The United States Program for General and Complete Disarmament in a Peaceful World," as Department of State Publication 7277.
The disarmament plan envisioned in Publication 7277 would lead to a U.N. Peace Force which would be more powerful than even the United States military. According to this United States disarmament plan, "In Stage III progressive controlled disarmament and continuously developing principles and procedures of international law would proceed to a point where no state [i.e. nation] would have the military power to challenge the progressively strengthened U.N. Peace Force...."
Less than a year later (March 10, 1962), a study paper was completed by the Institute for Defense Analyses on behalf of the Department of State with the title of "A World Effectively Controlled by the United Nations," authored by Lincoln P. Bloomfield. According to this study, which was not publicly available until over 30 years later:
"The notion of a 'UN-controlled world' is today a fantastic one.... But fresh minds from military, scientific, and industrial life, as they focus on the increasingly irrational arms race, have sometimes found the logic of world government — and it is world government we are discussing here — inescapable.... The September 1961 US proposals [in State Department Publication 7277] follow the same pattern. Here, then, is the basis in recent American policy for the notion of a world 'effectively controlled by the United Nations.'"
As laid out in Publication 7277, our UN membership has led to many decades of disarmament agreements, no-win UN wars, and seemingly endless UN peace-keeping missions and nation-building. This willing subservience to the UN was continued by the Bush administration when it justified the commencement of war on Iraq in 2003 as enforcement of UN Security Council resolutions.
One of the greatest explicit threats to American sovereignty in 2013 is the Law of the Sea Treaty (LOST). First negotiated over 25 years ago, most of the nations of the world have already ratified LOST. However, the United States has been a notable holdout, and for good reasons. The UN ocean regime authorized by the LOST treaty can be thought of as a sort of League of Nations for joint control of the world's oceans and seas. Just as the League of Nations, the post-WWI forerunner of the United Nations, was doomed to failure due to the lack of U.S. participation, so the UN ocean regime based on the LOST treaty will likely fail without United States ratification of LOST.
Here's what the UN's Division of Ocean Affairs and Law of the Sea (DOALOS) had to say at the official celebration of the "25th Anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea" on October 17, 2007:
"The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea ... is perhaps one of the most significant but less recognized 20th century accomplishments in the arena of international law.... Its scope is vast: it covers all ocean space, with all its uses, including navigation and overflight; all uses of all its resources, living and non-living, on the high seas, on the ocean floor and beneath, on the continental shelf and in the territorial seas; the protection of the marine environment; and basic law and order.... The Convention is widely recognised by the international community as the legal framework within which all activities in the oceans and the seas must be carried out."
The LOST Treaty is likely to be brought up for a ratification vote in 2013.
The above are just a few of the reasons for why Americans need to call on Congress to Get US out! of the United Nations.
For many years Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) had introduced a resolution in each new Congress calling for an end to U.S. membership in the UN and titled, "The American Sovereignty Restoration Act," H.R. 1146. Beginning in the 1990s, amendments (based on H.R. 1146) in the House calling for withdrawal of U.S. membership in the UN and for defunding the UN have gained scores of votes.
Although Ron Paul retired at the end of 2012, Rep. Paul Broun (R-Ga.) has stepped forward to continue the tradition begun by Ron Paul by introducing H.R. 75, the American Sovereignty Restoration Act of 2013 on January 3, 2013. This new bill duplicates all of the language and provisions of the previous Ron Paul bills.
As the Obama adminstration gets more and more involved in new disarmament agreements, international financial bailouts, and various UN treaties, including possible Senate ratification of the LOST Treaty as well as the UN Arms Trade Treaty, it is high time for the American people, many newly-awakened to the threats to our Republic, to demand that Congress withdraw our membership in the United Nations, now!
Regarding the Law of the Sea Treaty (LOST), Section 10 of H.R. 75 would "end any and all participation in any and all conventions and agreements with the United Nations and any organ, specialized agency, commission, or other formally affiliated body of the United Nations." Thus passage of H.R. 75 would prevent the Senate from ratifying LOST, or if LOST would be ratified before the passage of H.R. 75, then Section 10 would guarantee that we would end all participation in LOST.
Getting out of the UN would also help curtail U.S. involvement in the implementation of the UN's Agenda 21, which in turn would help preserve our individual rights, especially private property rights, as well as our form of limited government under the Constitution. in fact, Section 8 of H.R. 75 would repeal the United Nations Environment Program Participation Act of 1973, thus freeing us from participation in UN environmental programs.
