Here's a mystery piece...any ideas

I went through some of my items that have been soaking since the hurricanes of 2004.
I forgot about this one, it has yet to be identified.
Found south of Spessard Holland...I Know that a new wreck or some scatter is possible in that area.
Some think it may have Medical signification...
Laurel Wreath upon Pillars with what looks like twin serpeants wrapping the base..........
Can anyone shed anything new on it...4.25"...I believe it to be pewter, no touch marks...as I have mild acid treated the back in a small area to expose......it did have 2 small bronze pin heads.
Thanks...

Re: Here's a mystery piece...any ideas

Trez would have to verify it, but I really think, as I mentioned in post #8, that at the very top of the wreath, there appears to be a deeper pocket of corrosion which would indicate to me that a piece that used to be above the wreath, like an ornate torch and flame, has been broken off and is missing??

As far as the holes in the center section, my theory on that is that this is a hand made piece casted from the 1880's and is meant to be symmetrical, but because it was hand crafted, not machine made from a die, it is not "perfectly" symmetric side to side. The holes seem to be part of the design??

19th century ormolu Mounts.......Doc......where are you Doc? These are so close Im shaken in my shoes....

They sure are close, shrink the torch and it is almost dead on. Where did these pictures come from? What do they represent????
You know what they remind me of? Decorations put on gravestones.
Regards,
Doc

Hi Doc

Mine were from an eBay auction currently running but they match almost exactly the one in Smithbrown's link. His was a modern reproduction I believe for sale and the eBay auction claims they are genuine 19th century pieces.

Plus, in my post #51, I posted several good links that give photos and info about ormolu pieces.

That's what is also fun about trying to figure out these "what's its", I learn so much during the researching about things that I didn't know... Smiles!

Take care!

Trez, what style of furniture is abundant where you found this piece?
That will be a tough one to answer...
It was a beach find...I dug the piece 8' from the cut on the beach after the 2004 hurricanes.
It was just south of Spessard Holland G.C Melbourne, Beach, FL

You know what guys and girls? We have all been forgetting about that little 'jewel' on this object. That says to me something personal, not furniture. What do you think about that? Don't see a jeweled something in furniture or a candle scounce do you? A broach or cloak pin with a little jewel, pins in the back and their retaining points?

The original description does not mention jewels, only two bronze pinheads, before we start jettisoning all our work!

Quite right. In fact, I just asked Trez about it. There is no jewel. It's the remaining head of one of the small bronze pins.

Although it was and is an interesting find and led us a merry chase, after Smithbrown's and BDoo's posts I'd say this one is ready for the official, "Say goodnight, Gracie!"

If so, or if not... it's official: no jewel.

I agee Monty, looks like a torch with a wreath around the flame. the serpents look more like vines or maybe ribbons.
ditto.....vines...with a red gem....didnt see it until I lightened it up...

O.K. You are saying that Michelle is in error with her picture identification on this post, is that right? I thought it showed a little red jewel.

Doc

No, I am saying the following:

1. Trez found the object, cleaned it, and has examined it firsthand. We have not.

2. Trez supplied the photographs under discussion, so presumably there is no confusion in his mind about what appears in those images.

3. Trez stated to me in a message today precisely what I have related, namely, that there is no jewel on the object.

I do not believe that anyone else has raised the issue of who is, or was, "in error." Nor do I believe that any purpose is served by attempting to make that the issue.

Re: Here's a mystery piece...any ideas

I just wanted to thank everyone.........yes, everyone...for the fantastic info that was supplied to me.
It was the best and closest info that I have received since I found the dang thing...and has opened the door for me to futher pursue at a later date if I ever should get the time...you have all provided a great starting point, you really have.
It is a difficult task to try to ID something especially when one cannot hold the item in ones hand...and inspect it closely. The photos weren't the best and maybe my description wasn't either, but you guys/gals did it a great job in what little I provided....
I like to see differences of opinions and thoughts on these items...my intentions were not to fire up the board but somehow it begins again...PBK posted, let's end this tread...and I must agree.
You all did a great job, time to move on to another item in which someone else needs help. ;)
