Here's a mystery piece...any ideas

I went through some of my items that have been soaking since the hurricanes of 2004.
I forgot about this one, it has yet to be identified.
Found south of Spessard Holland...I Know that a new wreck or some scatter is possible in that area.
Some think it may have Medical signification...
Laurel Wreath upon Pillars with what looks like twin serpeants wrapping the base..........
Can anyone shed anything new on it...4.25"...I believe it to be pewter, no touch marks...as I have mild acid treated the back in a small area to expose......it did have 2 small bronze pin heads.
Thanks...

The center of the laurel looks like it has a lit torch in it to me? Monty

I agee Monty, looks like a torch with a wreath around the flame. the serpents look more like vines or maybe ribbons.

Re: Here's a mystery piece...any ideas

It looks to me as above the top of the wreath , there looks like a broken area so maybe there was a piece missing that extended above the wreath?

Could the straight part throught the center possibly be a spear, sword, or arrow??

just some thoughts/observations... still looking.

can we see the backside? may be something there that you overlooked.

Looks like a wall sconce to me, for holding a candle.
Two holes in the middle for hanging, and the area you would put the candle in seems broken off.
It also looks upside down to me,(narrow side should point up.)
just my 2 cents.

I like that idea..I think you are close. But how would you mount it to wall?
Need to see the back... ???

You really think it's upside down? The torch and wreath motif is common, possibly a souvenir pin/brooch from an early olympics. would still like to see the backside.

back side...I cleaned one small area where I was hoped there would be a makers mark, etc.
Nothing...

I think the back view will help us a lot.. As far as the torch think, maybe so..

Is it my old eyes or are there discolored spots in two locations , like pins were once there? ???

There were indeed 2 small bronze pins...one on the top wreath area and the other was just below the vines or serpents...
The bronze heads are all that remain.......and the one is embedded in encrustation.
Thanks for trying guys, this is a tough one.

yes it does look like it is broken there too.....I wonder if this is an ornament from something having been so flat on the back?

It is indeed broken in 2 pieces...I did it while I was digging it up.

Trez

were these pins like you would find on a tie tac or lapel pin? Is there a red gem stone like we see in the lightened pic or is it an illusion? Also, are you sure it's pewter and not silver? Does it appear to have ever been plated or enameled?
