Congrats on a rare button find. Should see this one at the top soon. There are only two things that bother me about your amazing finds: 1) the fact that you are finding them and not me, and 2) how the first thing that you do is ask how much is it worth?

Great find!! That's a well documented patriotic Rattlesnake button. Most feel these date to right after the Revolutionary War. Even though it is well documented in Troiani's and Albert's books, it is still an uncommon find and deserves to be on the BANNER.
You got my vote

I might have missed it in an earlier post or thread of yours but I'd love to get more details about the history of the site that you are hunting. Obviously you don't want to give up he location but the date and history of the site would be very interesting.

Easily a BANNER find, and certainly the find of the year--unless you are dealing with a discarded coat and end up finding several more. That is not unheard of, to find multiples. I have found multiple buttons twice. One was a full coat of KY state seal buttons dug in Southern Indiana. Another was four Pelican buttons dug in Louisiana from the same discarded coat.

Get digging. Oh, and don't use water to clean them off. Just dry toothbrush or toothpick. (See my post "How to Clean Buttons" in the preservation section of the forum.) I thought I'd state that since you are recovering Valuable buttons. The one you dug would date to the very early days of Kentucky settlement. There aren't many colonial sites to be found in Kentucky. I can say that I was probably on 4 or 5 true colonial era sites in all the sites I hunted in KY in 14 years.

Regards,

Buck
