This object is made of fairly heavy duty brass, very crude and has the letter "H" stamped in one side. It has an old rusted nail/pin going through it with some decayed wood still in the hollow shaft. Thought it might be an old cane handle or something of that nature. Any help would be appreciated. thanks, chris Also it looks to have a #3 stamped in the other side & has file marks on it.

the gap is between 15mm-18mm plenty of diameter for a thin wooden pole.

If it was a wooden pole it was the size of a wooden pencil or smaller....What would they use a stick that small for?

what kinda pencils do you use :icon_scratch:

Best I can do, pencil will not go in due to rusty pin.

I remembver these from grammer school. They were used to pull shades down on very high windows. I believe they are too small for pike poles. They were also used to open and close the windows above door ways.
Ballbuster is right, I also remember these in school. There were several different designs as well. There is one that has a loop on the end and is used to rotate a worm gear to open or close the window. Not being a real good kid all the time got me window duty after school, in addition to cleaning erasers.

Just to add fuel to the fire they were also used to pull large rolled maps open for display. Ah, the memories keep flooding back. Sucks getting old!!

You always know when its something very old and handcrafted because no one can find one that looks just like it...If it was a window /blind/ rod -thingie there would be 100,000 of them on the internet just like it :D
