This object is made of fairly heavy duty brass, very crude and has the letter "H" stamped in one side. It has an old rusted nail/pin going through it with some decayed wood still in the hollow shaft. Thought it might be an old cane handle or something of that nature. Any help would be appreciated. thanks, chris Also it looks to have a #3 stamped in the other side & has file marks on it.

Pike pole. Fire departments use them.

looks like it, my second guess was a boating hook, but the first is better

Although now that I look at it, it would be a tiny one? :icon_scratch:

Just a simple hook type pole, possibly for boating or snaging something.

Maybe a Mail hook?

I remembver these from grammer school. They were used to pull shades down on very high windows. I believe they are too small for pike poles. They were also used to open and close the windows above door ways.

The old school that I went to had vent windows above the doors. A pole with a hook was used to open and close them. Tony

The area it was found goes back to civil war or a little earlier, have found CW relics in the same area. By the way, how big are FD pikes ??? There are no bodies of water nearby.

Pike Pole vary in length. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pike_pole But most all of them have much larger ends than your relic.

I also thought that it could possibly be a flag pole top.

No, It was not found in Fla., but it sure looks like it was! A flag pole top is a possibility. :)

Its not a barrell tap piece, but I understand why it crossed your mind, it crossed mine as well.

You can see the two iron filled holes where it was fixed to a wooden pole.
