Ok, I was told to ask here, what this may be. Quite a few agreed it was hearth like. I found it in my front yard about 18 inches down. My land was a 200 year old plus farm property. This was beside tbe barn.

I'd it's and andiron any ideas on age and if it was hand forged? And what would tbe two bolt holes be for in an andiron . I don't want to dig up my front yard looking for tbe other one, if tbis is just a part from a tractor or wagon.

It certainly looks like it could be a hand wrought andiron, but I have some doubts. if you look at the picture you posted of the set you see they are more of a 90 degree angle front and back than your piece is. Plus the two holes suggest it was mounted to something. My thought is that it was a bracket used to hang something on a rope or hook, maybe for dressing meat, or something along those lines.....

Bolt holes for a cross piece in rear to keep distance to fit fire place?. A piece of thick flat stock against back of fire box maybe.
Seems like dropping wood on them would cause them to walk.

Yeah I have my doubts about the andiron. I think it's probably something less interesting .. Lol.. I find alot of parts to farm equipment.. I'm still thinking it maybe something along those lines... But I wish I knew what. I wouldn't care if I had just found it somewhere, but when it's from your own land ... You want to know the history of the find even more.

It looks hand wrought to me also. It could be a "one-off" creation made for a specific use. I've seen many similar items used in fire places to support cooking kettles and the like. Nice item!
