Oh Boy, wanted to find some more awesome finds like earlier this week on the giant field im detecting. Instead i learnt a very scary lesson about being helpless in the middle of nowhere with nothing but what you cary on your body and nobody around that might be able to help you.
Well, the day started bad because i had problems with my hand from all of this weeks detecting. This morning, the Hand was suddenly swollen like baseball glove so my girlfriend wanted me to go see a doctor. Was kinda concerned about it being a Thrombosis from the latex gloves that im wearing. At that time, i was already prepped to go on the field again because i was pretty sure it was simply from all the digging that i did the day before. Well, long story short...did not go to the doctor and went to the field instead. Girlfriend was beyond pissed but i was still optimistic i made the right decision.

An hour later i was at the site. Soil was very muddy and i decided to go further away from the Road because the soil was dry there. At this point, the hand was killing me and i felt like kicking my own butt for not going to the doctor. Wasnt really in the right mood for detecting in wet mud so the whole search wasnt really great. Found a few neat things but nothing great. I was getting down on the ground to dig out a small coin that i just detected and when i wanted to get back on my feet again, i saw a Hog on the other side of the field. And it was running towards me. I was immedietly standing up to look bigger. At this point, i was already bringing the detector away from me because i knew this would gonna hurt. Put it a few meters away from me on the ground, took my knife and my shovel out of the backpack and screamed to scare it away. No Reaction at all....just a wild hog crazily running towards me. Cant tell you the terror i felt at this point...i was in the middle of nowhere...there were no trees, no people that heard me, nothing that was able to save me and fat pig trying to stamp me in the ground. I was like...this is it. It´ll kill me. Decided not to wuss out but stand my ground. Took the shovel like an axe and beat it with it as it hit me like a train. Was flying a few feet through the air and probably broke my rib when i hit the ground. Shovel was flying through the air and was gone at that point. When i saw it was attacking again, i was snapping. Pulled my knife and stabbed it once in the rib cage but couldnt really bring it in. At this point, it made a loud roar and finally decided its better to run away. For the first ten minutes i was just sitting there and staring. Had total horror in my eyes because i was concerned it would come back. Then i decided its time to go, packed my detector and left. Was really glad i´ve put the detector away when i still could because that monster whould have smashed it to pieces. Thats probably the only good thing that came out of this day. Not sure how to deal with this kind of stuff in the future. I was not a threat to the hog or anything like that. Saw them at least 20 times in the past months and none of them ever attacked. Until today. Not sure but i might get me a hunting license or something like that. Dont want to make this experience ever again...Take care guys. Good Hunting.

Will post some pics from my finds later today in this Thread btw. Just wanted to share this story with you guys.

Glad you weren't severely injured, I've only seen wild hogs on animal planet...but they inflict some awful wounds on people. Hope your feeling well, probably should get that hand checked out too. Stay safe

I say you had great luck. I myself have seen worse things happend with wild pigs. But i never seen or heard about a boar attacking over a whole field. It only happend in the woods or when you get close to them in a corn field or so. Nevertheless, you had BIG luck. The wounds boars can do don't look good.....trust me.

wow that's just crazy. Glad you got out of it ok.

I am often deep in the woods or lost in some field. I wonder about such things, mostly dogs. I like to think I have a plan, offering them my left arm when they attack and lifting the head to grab the throat, but I never been pressed into any encounters where I had to defend myself. Scary stuff

Time to consider a concealed carry permit my friend,You were lucky today,It could have been much much worse!!! Glad you made it out of there in one peice!!!

...I beleive he is in Europe....where you cant protect yourself??If this isnt a primo example of why gun ownership is precious,I dont know what is!!Glad your OK mate,I have been attacked by hogs as well....viscous critters, when provoked,or not

I only have one piece of advice for you . Springfield Armory .45 ACP

Thank you guys. At this point, i still dont know what to say. I am a very hardcore guy and i am hard to scare but atm, i am still traumatized. Dont know what i´ll do to avoid something like this in the future but next time i go there, i will need a lot more than a knife to make me feel safe. Before today, detecting alone in the wilderness felt a lot less scary. ;)

That experience sounds horrifying. I am so glad you came out okay. If you don't mind me asking, where do you hunt?

I hunt in the german and french borderline. I need a weapons permit to be allowed to carry a gun. You only get one if you are a hunter or a sport shooter. Before today, i would have never considered killing a hog. Never in a million years. But right now, i seriously consider applying for a hunters permit to be allowed to carry a gun. Sad to say but i guess i definately underestimated the risk a wild hog can pose to a treasure hunter.

.45 ACP is a good advice, but living in europe makes it worthless. The laws in most countries here didn't allow you to protect yourself with firearms. Not at home and not in the field. :BangHead: I have a license for firearms, but to get a carry permit takes a lot more, at least here in Germany. And a hunting license allows you to carry only during hunting or out in YOUR hunting territory.

Only thing that works is a bit old school. But it works since hundreds of years:

I have saw the damage wild hogs can do,Wild Boar in the US have not only maimed,But they have attacked an killed alot of ppl,SOme of those ppl were armed during the attack and still didnt make it out of there.Just be really careful man,Today you got seriously lucky,It could have been much worse,A wild hog can remove digits from your hand with a single bite.Im just seriously glad that you made it out of there without serious injury,If you cant get a permit you may want to consider hunting with a buddy in places like that. Id have crapped my pants for sure if i would have been in that situation. I carry a 380 most of the time because of the rattlesnakes here in VA but i couldnt imagine the terror of a charging boar with or without a handgun.

Westfront, i totally agree with you about this. I guess we might even be from the same area btw. Westfront is a very well known word for me in my region.
Not a friend of the lax Weapon laws in some countries myself, i definately think i should have the right to defend myself. At this point, i dont know what i´ll do to give me back a bit of the security that i lost today. Thinking about getting me a mini crossbow for my backpack. I know you are not allowed to use them for hunting but i am pretty optimistic it should be legal to carry one with you just in case. I know it looks crazy but i dont wanna be in a similar situation again. I own a bigger crossbow already and i know there a very tiny versions that could easily be stored in a large backpack. Today, i would have had all time in the world to load it. I saw the hog running towards me for at least a minute or so. Or maybe i get me an extremely loud siren or a taser.

I have shot several big wild hogs with a couple different handguns...and while they all did die...only once did the 1st shot stop one in it's tracks. Rifle or shotgun best odds for dropping one quickly.

*WHEW* Quite a story!

It wasn't until the last couple of sentences that I realized you weren't talking about my ex-wife.

I'm glad your okay!

The acp is a joke to a steaming boar sorry guys lol
You need the Total digger protection program

Taurus Raging Bull Magnum
6 shot chambers all these.
45 long colt
454 casul
.410 shotgun rounds

The 454 is a beast.
The 45 colt is easier to shoot but 2x the power of the acp
410 is available in buckshot too for personal protection.

That is very scary! Glad you made it through the situation with the limited damage you suffered. It could have been much worse!

Glad you made it without serious injury, or worse. Of course, I can hear your girlfriend now, "See? I TOLD you if you didn't go to the doctor you'd be attacked by a wild boar!"
