I found these 2 half dollars, 1918 walking liberty and an 1894 barber. They were tightly fused together with copper and they have etched look after cleaning. I had to use a vise to separate them and soaked in some vinegar. It was in an area where the houses there would have been bulldozed over in the '40's for flood control. Any ideas why they would be joined together?

Cool find, congrats!

As The Rebel said, there was probably a copper coin between and caused galvanic corrosion.

Galvanic corrosion (dissimilar-metal corrosion) is an electrochemical process in which one metal corrodes preferentially, when in electrical contact with a different type of metal, and both metals are immersed in an electrolyte such as water.

Congrats on the 2 half dollars, very nice way to start the year off.
I've dug silver that had the same look when they's touching each other.
The acidity in the ground, moisture also plays a big part in the 10% copper leaking from the coins.
Many caches have this effect, from sitting together.

"Silver coins are often alloyed with copper. During burial, these coins can develop a green corrosion crust (malachite or atacamite) when the copper in the alloy corrodes preferentially to the silver."

Wow ... two silver Half Dollars stuck together - that's different - congrats !
