Hi all. I dug this GW button. It has GW in the middle and “long live the president” around the edge. The general consensus says it’s authentic but there have been a few couple that have doubts. The doubt is that it appears to have raised lettering. I’ve posted it on ID ME and one commentor stated he found 4 in the same field and one of them had the same exact raised effect... what do you all think?? Is this an authentic GW button or a “late 1800/early1900” reproduction? FYI found in northern NJ. I'm assuming you found this at an old site? I can't imagine it being fake if it was.

Found on a site dating back to 1840s only a few miles from Washington’s headquarters in Morris county NJ.

Can't remember seeing one with the raised lettering. There's a version with raised letters and a GW in script letters but I can't remember seeing one like you have. Maybe you found the only one. There's always a chance. Hope it's real.

Many, many, many variations of the GW Buttons. I would say authentic!

Congrats!

Looks legit to me, although I'm not familiar with early reproductions mentioned in your OP. Your copy and paste photo is from the extensive website on GWI buttons. What does that website say about this variety? If it's a seldom found variety, that's always a bonus. :icon_thumright:

yep, nice find. Awesome save. Congrats!

Nice!!! Congrats!!!

Its fine.

I assume at some stage it was plated. They cut into the plate & core & harden the copper core underneath with the letters. Note all the plating is corroded away & so is some of the surface copper core.(you can easily see how corroded it is) The area of the incised letters has kept better than the surrounding area leaving them raised. Thats not how it started life, just normal ground affects not a manufacturing variation.

I would fight a street gang on main street if anyone told me it was a fake..If it were me lol Cool relic

Outstanding relic! :occasion14:

Hello, let me first state all GW buttons were stamped in copper or brass. Second to have raised lettering it would have had to been a molded button. No GW buttons were ever molded. All were fashioned in a steel die hub. Yes, they did make very early anniversary issue buttons. Even some with raised letters such as yours. This is still a great find, but just does not bring it to when George Washington was inaugurated in 1789.
