In my humble opinion, I agree with the others that have suggested that it would look (and be) a much cooler relic if now left alone. If you want an old revolver to display for some reason, you could pick up some old similar looking piece for under $100 (maybe under $50 if not working). Put this in a neat shadow box for the wall or coffee table and include a little story/ provenance and now it tells a story. By dressing it up with new grips etc., you'll probably hear "why did you do that to it?" But it's yours and you should do as YOU like.

There are hundreds out there. Here are the first few I came across. 6 Shot 32 S&W H&R 1904 DA Revolver 4 5/8 BBL : Curios & Relics at GunBroker.com, US Revolver Co DAO break-top Iver Johnson 38 S&W? : Revolvers at GunBroker.com, ARMSLIST - For Sale: IVER JOHNSON Parts gun.

Now another option would to find a "duplicate" of your gun (maybe a broken-parts gun that looks good) and put them BOTH in the display case. Now that would be really neat.

Great site, cant find any colts though for that price or am i blind. Im going to be printing out pictures that i took with my phone than displaying it all together cleaning process, location found, dug picture etc.

As mentioned, if you just want to display an old revolver (make unimportant), there are plenty out there. If you are positive of the make, model, and manufacture date and want to proceed with the combo display, you would need to get serious on your search to find one that fits the bill (cost and look). This might take some effort by searching all the sites available and by putting out requests for help at gun shops and firearm internet sites.

I wouldn't try to open the side plate, all that will do is damage it.... I understand the desire to know when it was made, but tearing it up on the slim chance that any numbers survived seems like a losing proposition to me

If I am not mistaken the serial #s on colts are located on the right outside frame under, where the barrel screws in, and on the inside on left side where the cylinder mates up under the barrel. Good luck on finding a #.
