After you have it cleaned to your satisfaction and if you want to do the wax boil.
Make sure it is well dried.
The trapped liquid will boil and expand and could split the grips and cylinder.

After cleaning I've soaked the items in alcohol (not the drinking type).
It absorbs water and evaporates quickly and helps with the drying.
Leave it in a warm dry place for a few days and then do the wax boil.

You could probably put it in a bag of rice to soak up the moisture like they do with phones that get wet?

No, that would means letting it sit in an oxygen and moisture container. IT would absolutely re-rust like. I have to go very quickly from cleaning to preservation to prevent new rust from forming

That's a pretty crazy find! I would love to run across something like this and keep driving on with the search of the area! GPS and Pictures on your phone are super helpful. I n my line of work when you have to exploit a scene, you take a wide area picture, a close up, and then make sure you are getting pictures from that spot in the four cardinal directions. This will help you remember all of the details when you are documenting it later on, and it will also assist you in planning your next adventure into the woods... great find!

To me, with the lack of an ejector shroud and the curve of the grip, it looks like an old colt.

That is a beautiful find. I can only begin to imagine how it got there and why it was tossed. Ahhh how the imagination works.

From other responses it doesn't sound like you want to do that. However, if you were to, don't use rice, use silica gel desiccants.

Hey everyone, havent updated for a while. 20161018_113154.jpg
It was in the ground for a while could it be an early colt like 1909 or so? Its been in the vinegar for some time, ive been cleaning and letting it soak. Any recommendations as too the next step i think its pretty much clean. Whats left is just base metal. Should i try to take it apart? Man i wish this thing was complete. Can i restore this any further?

I think if you tried to take it apart it would fall to pieces. Looks cool as is. I preserve some of my old iron finds with boiled linseed oil, but there's guys here got better methods I'm sure. Nice find.
