You all knew this was coming, right?

After months of serious searching I came up with this 10K ring early this morning.

The ring has 2 small stones, the initials MHS and the year 1991.

Here's how my day began: Yesterday I was driving around looking for new areas to detect, I found another school in a nearby city..I couldn't get out yesterday because of family commitments, so I had to wait until this morning. I woke up around 5:30 a.m. (with thoughts of going out Mding) and left the house shortly after 6:00 a.m. The first thing I did when I got to the school was search close to the building itself. I found a Sacagawea dollar coin first, then not much of anything. I proceded down the hill to a huge playground area and pulled out a couple dollars of clad, then I noticed this big old tree standing all by itself on a hill pretty far away from the school.

For some reason I felt like walking toward this particular tree..it was old and half dead and had lots of wood bark and debris around it. Within one minute of swinging the coil near its base I got a very solid nickel signal, so I started to dig and found the ring only about 2 inches below the dirt. I didn't bring my reading glasses, but the print was big enough to read 10K. In the photo, the screwdriver in the ground right in front of my detector's coil is the exact spot where the ring was found. Not a big ring, and not 18 or 24K, but it was my goal since the beginning of the year to find ANY gold ring, and it finally happened !!

Then...

After the rush of finding the ring subsided, I headed back to the wood chips. I searched them thoroughly earlier, but I thought I'd check them again. I found a few more modern coins, and then another signal..a solid bottle cap...right below the chips was this:

Now I was gasping for air! The size of this ring amazed me. However, there was NO WAY something this big could be real..the
detector's coil in the photo shows the location of this ring.

When I got home I looked at the inside band with a magnifyer and saw dots of brown, so the ring is not of great quality..I doubt very much if the stone is authentic, but I thought I was gonna die when I first saw it gleaming in the sunlight.

The inside writing says 18KSERSC. Anyone know what this means? Here are both rings next to a penny for size comparison.

It was an amazing day for me. I want to say "thank you" to the members of TNet who encouraged me, especially dr quest, Bdoo (who even predicted it would happen this weekend!! Hey, are you psychic or something?) Nick, dave+bobbie, MEinWV, Iskuli and all the MDers who have been pulling for me all this time.

I'll be taking a short "leave of absence" to get my priorities in order..all this hunting not only wore me out, but left some things on the back burner that I need to get to..until then Happy Hunting.

Nice gold, Natman! Congrats!
It is an unusual design for a possible class ring. I'm wondering if the initials "MHS" are for maybe M________ High School. With the year being 1991 and the HJ 10K standing for Herff Jones (a highly reputable company known for making class rings).

http://www.herff-jones.com/highschool/

Just checked the HJ site, and that ring is listed in the "LaPetite" group, and it is called the "Intrigue"

Again! Congrats on your first!

Hey Natman Congrats on your GOLD find. That second ring would have given me a stroke.
I'm getting ready to put down the detector for a while and pick up the 12 gauge to chase some wild turkeys. Do you get out in those MO turkey woods?
Anyway, keep gettin out there,
Mark G

That is a very very nice find---Congrats

Great Job Nat, That is a very unusual ring. Never have seen anything like it. Makes me want to hit the schools even more than I usually do. Any initials on the school ring? The ringmaker HJ might have records as to who purchased this type of ring in your area in 1991. Wouldn't have been too many sold with that design I would think. I remember reading somewhere that a School ring maker does keep records of rings sold for ID purposes.. Just a thought... Anyway Great Job Keep it going..MidnightGuy

Thanks again, the rush has finally subsided..when I get out again (probably will have to wait till next week) I'm sure I'll get the itch to search for another.

No, I haven't turkey hunted yet, but I'd love to try it..there's tons of 'em out here.

No other initials except for the MHS..I registered on the Ringfinder web site as a start, I may be able to track down the owner eventually.

That's one sweet looking ring.
Glad you were able to stray off the path to find it.
Isn't funny how that big tree was calling to you.
They have called to me too, and I am sure one day I will have that kind of good fortune.
Looks like it could'nt have happened to a better guy.
Well get your priorities straight and head back to the treasure fields.
HH.
