I am assembling a list of US Army Great Seal button backmarks 1902-present.. This seems to be the most complete list available anywhere. With the help of TN members, I am occasionally adding and improving upon it. So far I have over 100 different backmarks. Anyone with a Great Seal button backmark or backmark variation not listed please post the pic and Ill add it. :icon_thumright: The thread is already so long its not necessary to add anything already pictured. Thanks.

This is how it all started:

I bought 2 bags of small Great Seal of US buttons for a buck at a flea market. Can someone help me date these backmarks? I believe they are all post 1902. I cant find anything else online.

1- Top row SCOVILL MF'G CO WATERBURY (back ungilted)
2- SCOVILL MF'G CO WATERBURY
3- Bottom CITY BUTTON WORKS - N.Y.
4- WATERBURY BUTTON CO.

Yup, a couple weeks ago. You didn't notice the site is alot faster now?

http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,453356.0.html
I noticed my Charter Membership disappeared. :evil5: Yes it is faster but my email is much slower lol. Marc is gone? Thanks for the link. I will read it.
Maybe it just expired, coincidence? Marc is gone in the sense that he no longer owns the site but i'm sure he'll be stopping in every now and then.

Back to the subject. Here are the Litchfield buttons. These appear to be a rare pre WWI backmark.

I remember Marc gave everyone an extra month or something because the forum was down for a week or something like that?? What do you mean your emails are frozen? Your pm's? You can't access them?

As far as the Great Seal buttons go, I have several different backmarks, all listed. I do however have one button that doesn't match anything, but then I think it may not be a Great Seal because it lacks the constellation of 13 stars and the ribbon in the eagles mouth, it's only 16mm-

Also, you've probably already mentioned it in this thread, but when do the (no backmark) plastic or celluloid buttons date to? WWII?

Vegetable ivory (a nut) was used in the WWI years as an alternative and plastic, even cow horn were experimental in WWII. I think it would be cool to have one of the ivory ones as well as one made out of cow horn.

Yea maybe that was it. My pm box was instantly full so I deleted most of my pms so it works now. No biggie. Apparently you have limited space, no search and slower e-mail service as a non-charter member and thats the way it should be. Ill just have to get used to it or pay up. ;D

The button you posted is Indian War. The plastic buttons are cool, no backmark. Yours look newer than WWII but not sure. I cant see the shank.

I have an "Ivorine" backmark pictured and vegetable ivory types but it would be cool to see the cow horn.

To Bigcypresshunter: If you have an extra one of the button you have in the picture and willing to part with it, I would be interested... Let me know!

I've been collecting Great Seals for about 20yrs. I compiled this list from numerous sources. I have about 625 varieties so far. It's a very good button for specializing in.

I suspect this was answered somewhere in this thread. I found a great seal button with no back mark. What does this mean?
