Heya everyone!

So I found a gold nail today.
Yup!
It was bound to happen, thousands of regular iron nails and I finally find a gold nail. LOL
I never expected this!

My scale says it weighs .3 grams.

I posted the picture on a Facebook chat that I was in and was given some great information about its possible origins.

I was told that it could have come from an ornate Chinese Box used to keep important items in.
This nail was found a couple hundred yards upstream where I found my Chinese coin.

Tell me what you guys think. :)

Well now...
That's an interesting little find.

Fascinating ....
Plated iron or solid gold?
Does it attract to a magnet?

coolfinie's question is perfect. I would expect it to be an iron nail with cemented gold on it. I've seen iron coated gold before so this is just the opposite, gold coated iron. Cool find and nice looking gold in the pan, thank you for sharing! Please confirm the magnet test results.......................63bkpkr

Wonder if it would get banner if found with a detector8-)

Neo.... Why is it that when I read the thread title I had a picture go through my head of torn up train tracks and a massive train wreck at Promontory Point, Utah? Even though it seems a little small for a railroad spike, you might want to put that back just in case.

I used to do blacksmithing as a VERY serious hobby (did some apprenticing at stone mountain ga a bit). and was taught by a master smith in south GA. One of the first things i leaned to make as a smith was a square nail. He was an old timer and i specifically remember him saying that (back in the day) some people believed it was good luck to use a golden nail as the last nail of whatever structure they were building. Boats, houses, churches, etc.

I vote for banner find, its about time us prospectors were given some deserved kudos up there, the odds of a find like this and others made in this section can be more nil than some of the stuff up there and should be acknowledged as well!

It appears to be iron underneath, it is pocked and pitted like a iron nail under the gold. I am guessing it was in a spot where tremendous amount of water was pounding the heaving around it, gold, and it put a gold veneer to it. I also voted for banner, very rare, and so mall to recover. Congrats.

I thought it was silver for vampires? What does gold keep locked up? Cool find but maybe whatever it kept in is now out.....

I've dug up and thrown away handfuls of nails without hardly looking at them.... Never even heard of a gold nail before...
