BANNER ! How often do we find gold from the 18th century here in the U.S.

One of the members here suggested that I should have a jeweler look at cufflink, and
test the gold :thumbsup:So I took it by this morning. It tested 24 kt. :o and he agrees with
the date of early 1700's to mid 1700's.This was my first gold find.
Thanks for all the help.

It is an amazing find & looks mid-late 1700's & British made (I would say). I'm not say it isn't 24kt but that was not the standard of the time, it was 22kt prior to early 1700s & 18kt after. It did change a few times before, between 22 & 18 but 24 would be highly unusual due to it being too soft. You need a bit of hardness to wear something like this without it falling apart/bending. Might be worth a re-test, as I guess 22ct (still higher than standard). Still I might be wrong & it breaks the norm of the time, which mades it more interesting.

Thanks for info. You might be absolutely right as far as kt. scale. The jeweler said it was off the scale at 18 kt.So he retested. He got a mild reading at 24kt.So he said he would have to go with the 24kt reading. He did offer to retest for 3rd time, but he would have to file another area on it,which leaves a little black spot each time its tested. So I opted to settle with his reading,As they are already very soft and brittle. :dontknow:

arrh, yeah you don't want any distructive testing. It looks very high grade & soft & I would guess 22kt is most likely. Find of a lifetime :icon_thumright:
