I set out this morning to hike an area of woods to look for mid 1700s homesites. I had with me my equinox 800 using field 1 mode. No luck finding any homesites, and as I was tiring in the heat I set back out, wandering this way in that looking for anything besides square nails and shotgun shells. As shot gun shells seem to come in at 15, I got a 16 and thus figured it would be yet another, and being so hot I considered passing it up. So glad I didn’t. Out popped this lovely colonial wax seal( the second I’ve ever found) ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1561860796.373964.jpgImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1561860821.925095.jpgImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1561860835.846070.jpg

First, I’m thinking it might be gold in spite of the patina buildup in corners. Second, it appears it was lost before it could be engraved with the owners mark as the stone face is polished but blank. Any thoughts?
Thanks for looking. By the way, 16 tid is consistent with gold.

Relicmeister, wow...what a find!! It certainly looks gold to me, are you taking it to a competent jeweler to have it inspected or tested? Please do the footwork and let us know! I'm excited to hear back... and congrats on that stunner of a relic...Ddf.

Very sweet find !!!!! Congrats !!!!!

You really need to dig everything "8" or above. Gold likes to hide and some of the brass items are worth way more than gold.

Thanks for the nice comments. This is why I walk the old wood even though I usually wind up going after some iron signals which will sometimes get me a cool iron relic but often just a few squarenails and SHS’s. But now and again I’ll stumble onto such a totally random find. But, I’ll take it over clad anytime.

I agree with that 100%. I could so easily have passed this up convincing myself it’ll be just another shotgun shell. Do this at your own risk!!

I got "fooled" by my Deus, I guess it was late last year, I remember the find, not the dates anymore. It rang up as a "92" which is normally silver, and we have found silver coins in this field, but this puppy was a 2 escudo Spanish gold coin down 6".

Dig it all...I found out today the "Y" shaped iron thingie I found was indeed a linstock to a Rev War swivel cannon. IRON. Dig it all, especially until you find the age of your site.

Whether or not it is gold, it is a very cool colonial find. Congrats

99% of these are Gold Plated. The stone 'might' be carnelian, but as it's blank its just Fob watch bling as apposed to a usable wax seal.

This is my first wax seal , which certainly was used as an official wax seal. Who the colonial dude is I’m still trying to find out.

I agree with Crusader here. Seeing as it has a polished stone on the end, I think it's a fob off the end of a pocket watch chain. Nice find! :icon_thumleft:

NICE!!! I found the exact same seal- but silver washed and bent in Bucks County PA about a year and a half ago. It too had no face engraving.
