I have a gold acid test kit, but I am confused by the results. What constitutes a pass or fail. I took two rings, one I was uncertain about, the other I thought for sure was junk. So I did the 10k test on the uncertain one. The problem is, the scratch does not go completely away, but it fades a bit. All the video's I've seen, the gold does not change at all. Confusion.

On the ring I believe is junk, I did the 10k, 14k and 18k test, and no change whatsoever. More confusion.

If someone can help me out here, I'd be a happy camper.

sounds like your uncertain one is low quality and your junk is just the opposite! As long as you're doing it right anyways haha

Sounds like your uncertain ring might be plated. If your scratch got below the plating it'd pick up the base metal underneath. Are there any marks on it? If you tested 18k & no change it should be 22 or 24kt. A way you can confirm your findings is take them to a pawn shop. Let them test em & that will help confirm your results, and it costs nothing.
First step take a magnifier or loupe check for karat marks.
Second step take a strong magnet and see if your item sticks if it does it's probably plated. Magnets salveged from junk harddrives work real good.
Third step Get your stone & do your acid test.
