rook,

Try putting down a heavy layer of mulch could be dried grass clippings, wood chips or even cardboard between the rows. That should help suppress weeds, hold moisture and will break down and provide compost over time.

I may try a layer of heavy black plastic over the heavy infected areas of nut grass. With our heat hear I might burn it up. Might:icon_scratch:

That will work out fine, it will take a few weeks to cook them.
Remember nature doesn't like a void-so the weeds will come back.
You could put in a cover crop.

I’ve thought about that for years. I once was going to drill my own well myself. I got the plans off of UTUBE but never did it. My plan was to run plastic between the rows with irrigation. I’ve seen it first hand and it works really well for just about any row crop. No weeds. But I just settled for Treflan and rain. Treflan is good for most any thing but Cucumbers and a few other things. I’m thinking corn.

This other Hobomok Skipper was having lunch along with the Great Eastern Swallowtail.

Nice pic. We're just starting to get a few Monarchs this way. Hopefully my sunflowers and other assorted stuff will be up and flowering by the time they arrive.

I carry open Milk Weed pods in the arm rest of the truck. I put down the passenger side window while driving and the seeds get sucked out.
My way of populating the countryside.
I planted a lot seed as well this year, in hopes that they'll grow and help the Monarchs along their awesome journey.
