Giant Confederate flag to be raised over I-95 - Saturday

...
What about the 250,000 men who gave their lives for what they believed was right?
...

That figure may be quite low... New Estimate Raises Civil War Death Toll - New York Times, April 2, 2012

Both sides were American, and still are.

it is also to me a symbol of a time when that many people regardless the reason fought for what they beleived, for no other reason than they beleived in what they were risking the ultimate sacrifice.......would not be the same today. So many have forgot history or just have not ever been told the truth, and so many take for granted what we have...respect,integrity and the knowledge of a hard days work is a rarity today....

So.. with the new data it's possible the total number could be over 750,000 soldiers!
Of which.. around 300,000 Confederate soldiers may have lost their life fighting under that flag...
and we have people that don't understand why we want it remembered!?

This thread has made me more sympathetic to people wanting to fly the rebel flag.

I guess it's more about remembering than starting something back up. Hard to see that side from northern Ohio.

Here's a flag rule link.Flag Rules and Regulations

Most people around South Georgia fly it and use it for racial provocation.

Both sides of my family fought in the Revolution, thus we are Sons & Daughters of the Revolution.

5 members on my mother's side, and 5 members on my father's side fought alongside JEB Stuart, thus we are Sons & Daughters of the Confederacy.

No one in the history of either side of my family owned slaves, they were poor dirt farmers - but they were free, and free to choose. Clearly the war was not about slavery from my ancestor's perspective.

What did happen was the carpetbaggers came down and looted the South, and it took 100 years for us to progress on par with the industrial North. Wages here are still way behind Northern wages.

And, that is why we started booming, and they started bankrupting.

The War of Northern Aggression has begun again.... And they want to stamp out that flag again.....

Glad to see it fly :)

In order to know that you must know most of the people in South Georgia.

I know a good portion of them after being here 43 years. I was one of the ones who used to think it was flown for celebrating our heritage, but by the time I was maybe 18-20 years old I began to see that it wasn't used in that respect. I was raised in a very racist family and social environment. I'm feel very fortunate that I was able to rise above that and see people for who they really are. Not by race, nationality, religious affiliation, sexual orientation, etc. So to answer your question I may not know all of them personally but I do know the culture from which it's flown.

I was born and raised in the South as well, will be 65 on next BD. While it may have flown for racial purposes in 30s-60s that is no longer the case and it hasn't been for many decades.

Let's get serious, you may know most people in your town or even county if it is small but in truth you know a tiny percentage of South Ga. over all. Ga. Population is over 9 million, so if south Ga was only 1-2 million your saying you know most of them.

My great great grandfather on mothers side was from Florida and fought for Confederacy. He was captured and spent time prison war camp as well...

My great great grandfather was also captured. I have his original release paper....

Note on the bottom where he carried it folded and that part was soiled.

He died in a forest fire in the early 1870's, and we do not know the details of his capture or time in service.

Thanks TH !!!

Now, one thing of note on the document... To be released he had to swear to support the CONSTITUTION and government against all enemies.....

So, I guess that means I am bound to support the CONSTITUTION and government against all enemies - but what if the government becomes the enemy? Well, we still have the constitution, for now.

And note it did say "domestic" or foreign....

I travel from Tennessee to central FL pretty regularly. I wasn't only referring to my small town but the bottom 7 states as a whole.

One thing I'd noted over the last 20+ years down here was the absence of prejudice, where I had grown up in the midst of it. It was nice and peaceful here.

And then unfortunately "others" began screaming it again - Sharpton, Jackson - those who were profiting off it. And then of course those with political agendas and leftist views.

It's a shame, the peace is gone - replaced by the knock-out game.

These profiteers and agenda lovers are pushing us to the inevitable result. And I do think they know that.

Is it that they want conservatives exterminated?

Only thing I can figure.

They just keep pushing. Probably won't like the result in the end.

Geez, I saw far more prejudice in my years living in Detroit, than I do down here right now!

Fletch, you lived in Detroit too ???

I remember when that flag went up next to Tampa.

Quite a fuss-

But it's still there.

Seems regular folk got rights too...
