I have read and reread the dogone manual a dozen times and still cant figure out what the heck I'm doing wrong. I can't seem to even find and modern coins (pennies or clad). I went to a park across from a middle school and there is a pedestrian tunnel going under the road. I thought surely I would find at least a couple of pennies. Got all kinds of beeps but when I dig there is nothing. Went to a ghost town site over the weekend and all I found was a rusted iron ring about two inches around. Went to an empty lot where a carnival had set up a few weeks ago and came home with a screw base for a miniature light bulb.
If someone in the Colorado Springs area would please help me figure out what I'm doing wrong it would be greatly appreciated. ???
I am trying to use a Bounty Hunter Landstar.
you can email me at [email protected]
thanks for taking the time to read my rants, lol

i have the same one ralphw.....as a backup to my ace 250.....when i first got it, which was years ago, i did the ground balance and put it in all metal mode and dug all targets....u got to dig sometime so why not did all the time until he gets used to it...hope that helps....mark43

I would only dig solid or repeatable signals.

state parks,,,,, call the main office and ask about it every area is different

pj don't give up. I just e-mailed you my phone # I can try to help I've been mding for years and at first it's hard to understand what you are doing and what your machine is telling you. It takes practice and help sometimes. when I first start there were times I would get so frustrated I wanted to throw my detector and give up on the hobby but a another hunter gave me some help and now I've found 1000s of coins rings and other stuff. just give me a call and we can arrange some time that will work for the both of us.

??? it may get worse before it gets better but don't give up the bounty hunters are great machines. I have one myself....I usally set mine on the kitchen table and calibrate before hunting, I turn the sens. knob at 3 o clock and test various metals and you can adjust the discrem. knob to were it ignores all foil/trash or it will emit a low tone if it is a large object....I believe gold and aluminum have similar properties????? if the signal is strong enough I will dig....maybe gold ....maybe not....finding an old piece of history is great but digging and finding has a great element of suprise, the best natural hi....it is hard to wipe the smile off your face, also I keep mine in the auto notch mode ;) good luck'

Find an area that you know has no signals. Enlist the help of a friend to bury some coins and some other kinds of metals. Tell the friend to make sure to map where they put stuff. It doesn't have to be far apart. Just far enough apart so you only get one signal at a time.

Then you go MDing.

You should be able to figure out which bloop means what and how far down the bleepidy bloop is.

i have the rs version of the landstar and i don't think i could ever part with it. old coins, rings and relics.....it does it all!! hang in there with it as good advice has already been given and hopefully you do not have a defective machine, but maybe it is under warranty.

I'm getting a little frustrated myself at the junk i'm finding on long island.
this is getting rediculous. There is no way everyplace has been hammered is there?

OK, well I am frustrated too still but yesterday went to point pleasent beach nj and met up with a friend of mine who has been doing this for 25 years. Long story short, he found 6 RINGS and one of them was a diamond. Also he found a nice fossil watch. I on the other hand found only change and junk. But seeing his finds tells me it's there and I just have to keep at it, he said his first year sucked but he learned and now look at him!
So, yea I'm frustrated but the right attitude and determination I will persist!
I am leaving for the beach at seaside now, wish me luck!

Are you using the dfx? ??? What is the problem....with the high end detectors you have several options...are you hunting with tone id on ???

If I were you - I would be putting a penny, a dime and a quarter on the ground, and work with my detector on those first, before taking it out anywhere.

I have to agree with the Mrs.'s, make yourself a coin plot. Put down all kinds of coins. If you have some put some silver coins down. Also put a Gold ring and a Silver ring down. See how they come in on your detector. Where they are at when your coin goes over them. Are the signals in the center, over to the right when you pinpoint or maybe to the left of center.

I give this information to anyone who will listen. This advise is good for everyone. You can use this plot every year, just to tone yourself in.

Maybe you have to much sensitivity on your detector. Lower it some.

Good Luck and HH, Ringfinder

this is getting ridiculous. There is no way everyplace has been hammered is there?

actually no I wasn't.... thanks..... I need to figure this thing out. and make a program with all the settings I want maybe i will sit down with it later and do that, It is an awesome machine and I'm sure i will get some good stuff...

I agree with those that use them, if you use it right you will find good stuff. Now, without watching you, is the coil flat and close to the ground? Or is it raised up and slightly pointed towards the sky? You'd be amazed how many people I see doing this. Also slow way down and listen. Like someone else stated. Place some targets on the ground, fiddle with the knobs and get used to it. Good luck and don't give up that easy.

Ralph you should stop over in the dfx classrooom in the findmall.com forum....just read thru the last 50 posts or so. Do a search look around. The dfx is a detector that should put you ahead of the game... ;)

Don't give up...like other have stated test in yard first before going out detecting again. I suggest setting up a test bed, have someone hide various coins at different depths then go find them. Listen for tones, each coin and object has its on sound.
Good luck

I use a Radio Shack Discovery 1000 (Bounty Hunter Tracker IV). I love the meter. I love the toggle switch. Run it on Tone most of the time. Don't loose the nickels that way. Most of my finds have been found with it. Clads, silver, rings, relics. Also has been used in all kinds of ground conditions. Dry earth, dry sand, wet sand, fresh water lakes and salt water (Puget Sound). The automatic ground balancing is great. Also bought a 4 inch coil for it. Also have a White's Prizm II. Jumping around on the tab settings gets to me after awhile. It's my back up metal detector.
