Iv recently moved to colorado and want to get into gold mining.
Ever since i was young and watched the gpaa shows on tv think it was gpaa iv wanted to try it

My goal this year is to do some mining here in colorado. My major goal is being a diver is to run a dreadge but like recommended by a member here i figured id start with panning and such. Was wondering if anyone has some recommendations for good videos to watch reading material and a good site to order gear from

No reports of gold in the upper Colorado river to my knowledge but since the smaller streams do feed into it, there must be some here and there right!?

The key thing to remember about that area is there will be no historic reports of gold if it wasn't enough to make a living on back in the day. May still be enough to do well at with modern equipment though! Sample around in person and via google and keep GOOD notes on where you've sampled and what you've found. Over time you'll develop quite a level of expertise and insight. There are still areas up there with undiscovered sources of the gold so you never know where your notes might lead you!

The one thing paydirt will do for you that bbs and staples won't do is show you how gold looks and acts in the gravel and pan. Getting a cheep $20 bag for practice isn't a bad idea. You aren't looking to get rich from it just to learn so it is money well spent, you have the right idea. Keep putting the gold back into the sand and keep practicing until you get it down. Once you see how gold looks you will never doubt it in the field. You don't get that with bbs. Know what it looks like before you get out on the creek.

Good Luck!

this is SO TRUE... one you see it in your pan and see how it acts you will never doubt yourself again!

Thats my plan kevin. Kinda figure when i go scouting for hunting locations i might take a pan with me. If i run up on a stream check it out see if i find anything

Sounds like you'll have fun along the way and that's the first half of the battle :-)

Remember that prospecting via google is one of the huge advantages we have today.

I found this on gold fever prospecting.com

I figure the middle paragraph spots would be good to check out. Am i right

Grand Lake

East of Grand Lake 7 miles on route 278, the area lead silver mines had a by product of gold.

Kauffman Creek

Kaufman Creek is one of the five creeks that drains from the top of Gravel Mountain. Gravel Mountain, as its name implies is covered with gravel. Similar to that of Independence Mountain. All five of these creeks contain gold, but I've only prospected on Kaufman Creek. The heavy gravels in the bottom of the pan is just like those found on Independence Mountain. Leads one to think that these gravels are the result of glacial activity. On my last trip to the area, I found a false bed rock of conglomerate. With good gold at the contact zone. Have not found any nuggets, over 1/8", yet. But the area is worth prospecting.

Parshall

South of Parshall, to the head of Williams Fork, is the La Plata district. It extends a few miles southeast across Jones Pass on the Continental Divide in the headwaters of the West Fork of Clear Creek. The lode gold there is often associated with pyrite.

See, google is paying off already! I love it when I can point someone in the right direction and they RUN WITH IT!

Google is always my friend. Lol
After seeing pictures of Kauffman Creek and reading about it. Seems like a highing mined low producer. Doubt i hit it unless im up that way
